My African gray is so sick and I can't find a vet

Hi, I bought an African gray about a month ago, it was behaving great, talking, singing, it was all perfect, until someone told me it should not keep eating nuts all the time, my parrot refused to eat anything else but sunflower nuts, so I toke the nuts off for about a day and a half, then I gave him carrots, apples, and cucumber, and he ate them.. Then my nightmare began.. He started vomiting, his waste got yellow and green, he got fluffy, and sleeps a lot, and lately his movement got so slow, this has been like this for a week, the problem I couldn't find a vet for parrots in my city, no one understood in them, can anyone help me please?? Am I watching my bird dying???

Hi there Ahmad, so sorry to hear that your bird is sick. Unfortunately to diagnose a sickness correctly in birds, a visit to the avian vet is a must.
Where did you purchase the bird from, a pet store, or perhaps a breeder? If you did get the bird from a breeder, he might be able to assist you with the sick bird.

if there is not a member vet listed near to you, call the member vet closest to you and ask them for help/reccomendations. If you are outside of the USA, unfotunately I don't know where to look for avian spe******t information, but your bird definately needs to see a vet as soon as possible!

I'm located in Palestine, I've been searching the last few days for a vet and all spe******t in horses, sheeps and that kind of animals, none for parrots.. Maybe someone can let me know what to do instead of watching him die

You might try contacting the Kimron Veterinary Institute, Bet Dagon campus, they have an division of avian desease dept, I would think they would be able to help or refer you to an avian vet, good luck, please keep us advised on how you make out......

It sounds like you've changed his diet WAY too quickly. When adding veggies and fruits into his diet you should be careful not to add too many at the one time. What did you feed him? In case you gave him something toxic.

Apple seeds can be toxic. Did you give him the seed of the apple too? Also do you have any bird experience?
What you can try for right now is adding about 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar - OR - lemon juice to 1 cup of plain water and use this as the water source. This is in no way a substitute for a vet visit. What do other bird people where you live do if their bird is sick?? Please study up on the care of african greys. You have the internet so there are many good sites from which you can learn. Good luck and I pray for your bird to heal.

Dear All, thaks for all replies, I really started feeling better and got hope back on again.
Apple seeds, nope he didn't eat any, I gave him the apples sliced without seeds.
Birds ecperience? I have none.. If I had any I don't think things would reach this bad situation
What people do? I don't really know, I"ve spent three days looking for obe understand in parrots, couldn't find one.
I'll do that advice about lemon or apple cider in water, although he doesn't drink much lately.

Welcome to the forum.

Did you wash the fruits and veggies real good to remove any pesticides that they were sprayed with?

Also did you peel the apple? My breeder said to always peel the apple, peaches and any thing with a skin before you feed it to any bird.

Also you might switch to distilled water.

Spiritbird is correct on giving the apple cider or lemon juice.

Dear Cowtown, i didnt give him the whole Apple to eat, i thought it might be too big for him, so i cut it down to pieces and put it in his food bowel, but it was along with carrots pieces, and cucumbers pieces, it was well washed before, Jacko didnt eat the skin of the Apple he only ate the inside part.. he is too picky!! thats why i wanted to force him to eat other things than sunflower seeds..
i had a pharmacy guy friend, he gave me some orange flavour powder, he said they give it to babies after they have Diarrhea, it helps them get stronger, to i mixed a little from it with clean water and gave to jacko, it seems he liked it and drank a good amount from it..
i just woke this morning, and he is still there.. standing on the stick in the middle of his opened cage with his eyes shut...

Don't give him HUMAN medicines! Put him in a small cage with a heat lamp. Give him plenty of high energy seeds and maybe some hand rearing formula from a spoon or syringe. Only sunflower seeds has shortened his lifespan already I'm afraid. Give him a hot water bottle, a TINY amount of veggies, seed and easy to reach water. Then get off your computer and find an avian vet!! Talking to us won't solve much, as far as I know, no people here are certified avian vets!

ill get up now, clean his water bowel put fresh water, keep the seeds mix, partialy cover his cage.. and will keep u updated...

i really searched for a vet for 3 days... no one would help me.. the closest vet i met works with chickens farm, he said wild birds are different, so he couldnt help :-/

thats why i went online for last chance.. i hope this really helps.. i have no choice

Right, okay. The chicken vet would be better than no vet at all. Do you know any bird owners? Perhaps they know a good vet. Try looking up the phone book, the internet, everything!

I see no toys in the cage photo. AG must have stimulation from safe toys. They like to shred them. You can make them yourself. There are many post here talking about toys. Your bird is beautiful as most all Congos are. Hopefully when the bird is feeling better you will play with the bird too. When you eat have the bird with you to eat some food you are eating. They love the one on one time.

Ahmad, did you contact the vets at the links that were provided to you here? Your bird is very ill. Put him back on his original diet. Any food intake is important. Is he drinking? Put a light close to his cage and cover 3 sides to keep him warm. Do not give any meds unless prescribed by a vet. Tell us again how his eating habits, poops look and his behavior as of right now.
