Mustache Parakeet Mating Season - HELP!!!

This is my first post - happy to have found this forum! I am a first time bird mama, though I volunteered with a rescue for many years before adopting.

I've had my 2 mustache parakeets for just about a year now - a 10 y/o male and a 4 y/o female - and they have DEFINITELY entered mating season. He is very inept at doing anything about it, but aside from keeping him in another room away from her, he has turned from a sweet, quiet bird into a megaphone nightmare. He CONSTANTLY babbles, screams and honks at her. If they're on the same cage he'll TRY and do something, but never to any avail - she's got no interest, and would more likely bite him than try and mate.

Basically my question is HOW LONG will this last? We caught the tail end of it last year when we first adopted, but it was no where near this obnoxious. I can handle it, my husband is GREATLY rethinking letting me adopt them. I know he's just hormonal and frustrated (the bird, though the husband is as well!), but I'd love to know when there might be an end in sight. It started just under 3 weeks ago, and has reached a pinnacle in the last week and a half.

Thanks!

Hi Kate, and welcome to the forums. :)

Moustached Parakeets 'generally' go into breeding mode in early spring, and it 'should' all be over before summer starts. :54: Your poor dude sounds awfully frustrated, and I hope for everyone in your household that he'll return to his normal self soon. :)

Thank you! I couldn't find that info anywhere I looked. Let's hope for everyone's sake (his especially, poor thing - he tried mating with a paper towel roll on his cage the other day!) that it ends soon :)

Hello Kate, Welcome to the forum! I'm sorry you're little guy is so frustrated, hormonal parrots can make springtime a little challenging.
