So my husband had kept his empty 5-Hour Energy drink bottles to use for something, but he changed his mind and was going to throw them out... so I snagged them, cleaned them, and took the wrap off of them. I filled them with pony beads so they rattle and I drilled a hole in the lid. Then I strung leather through the lids and tied a knot on the inside to hang them. Something Munch cannot destroy easily or shred into a nest, AND it's a noisemaker, just what she loves! I am happy to report that I got woken up by the sound of her beating the heck out of it against the side of the cage!! She loves it! I shall try to get a photo of her playing with it, or even a video, but I'll need luck for that one, lately she sees the camera and decides she wants a close up lol

Wow, looks like it's exactly what she wanted. What a BINGO idea.
Great job, and you didn't have to pay $$$ for this toy.
I love making toys for my birds. I just received a box of different materials for making bird's toys (I ordered on EBay). Now I just have to find time to make them....... :(
Thanks for sharing.

I've been wondering, what kind of cage does Munch have?

Where I am I can't find ANY with bars that are horizontal rather than vertical!

What an awesome idea! I love it!!!!

oh geez, munch's cage is a hand-me-down from a very good friend for when her cockatiel got a new cage. and she got it second hand as well lol its a hagen cage, 19"x19"28" with the base, but Munch's cage doesnt have the base--we took it off, so it is 19"x19"x24" roughly.

this cage is often found on kijiji in my area like crazy, sold for $40-100 depending on seller and condition.

it's not the fanciest of cages, but its so darn sturdy its not even funny. its not collapsable or even able to come apart... the door latches shut (munch is an escape artist) and the bar spacing isnt 1/2" (munch has gotten her beak stuck twice in 1/2" spacing in her old cage so its not ideal for her. the bar spacing on this one is 5/8"... though hagen's site says 3/4" we measured it as 5/8" lol) it works for her, its roomy enough, and the bars are heavy enough to bash her toy bell against and make the most racket she can. its her perfect cage lol

this is the cage (as of about a month ago)

the bottom is a sliding in/out sheet of acrylic, and old cage grates zip tied to the bottom of the cage to hold in the acrylic sheet to keep it escape proof and bird safe

for this toy i simply recycled an old leather toy she stopped playing with and used the clean bottles lol recycling at its best!

I had a cage like that years ago and no you don't see cages like that much anymore around here. It's a very tough sturdy cage and no escape artist cage escape that clasp, unless it's a big parrot....

i would not house a large bird in this cage... not unless its for transport for a medium species and thats IT.

ive seen someone on kijiji house a poor african grey in this same cage (not mine, but you know what i mean)

i looooove the latch she cant open it lol we removed the feeders though. they were a nest. we removed the holders and cut an old cage grate and ziptied the pieces to block the holes. looks neater too this way. you could likely toss this darn cage down the stairs and only have a few minor scratches lol

we had two before and we had attached them together into one massive cage, but we took it apart and put the other down in storage as a spare travel cage... however someone broke into our storage unit and stole the cage part (not even the plastic base) and all of our christmas ornaments

Yes I've seen people housing Greys in that size of cage before as well. I was only saying only a big parrot can unlock that clasp lock. I've pinched my fingers in those doors before. :)

I was wondering about it, because I couldn't find ANY like it, and still can't.

Closest I could get was this one; simply because I couldn't get Porter to accept anything else, tried bigger; different size.. but no. For a while He was a cageless bird clinging to me all day or sleeping in his carrier then...

I tried this one and low and behold he accepted it right away....

I spend over $200 on a big one... another $70 on one roughly this size but tall not long... and what does he do? REFUSE them for months on end.

Then I got this cage.. and found the forum.

$36 later... and I have a happy bird, though lord knows why he likes the smaller cage.. lols.

But he plays on top alot as well .. so I suppose that makes up for the issues otherwise.
