One of Kiwi's "nicknames" is Mr. Ruffles. It's hard to put into words, but for the first time captured on film it is easy to see how he earned something so ridiculous sounding. So, you know those images of people in the fashion of the day from a couple hundred years ago? Like this guy, for example:

What a ridiculous animal huh?! It is not uncommon for him to have his neck ruffles out like this and it is so funny because there appears to be no reason his feathers are so... ruffled. Here are some more pics of him sporting his 'unique' looks:D

It's tough work being such a dorkasaurus:p (note the neck is still ruffled!)

LOL April! :D Honestly, I have never seen Amy do such a thing..At times he poofs out his leg fluffies..my mom used to say he had his "pontoons" out  Don't ask me...I have NO clue

Nice Ruffles you have Mr Kiwi ;)

really cute photos. especially the one with his eye closed (asleep?)

In the last book Robert Heinlein wrote (To Sail Beyond The Sunset) there was a cat mentioned that was named Fluffy Ruffles.

Maybe the feather follicles are not oriented so they don't lay flat against the others.

He was asleep in that one. He's adorable when he's asleep, looks like a stuffed toy. Shame his personality is more grizzly bear than teddy bear;)

He seems to have some control over when the neck ruffle is out and appears to like showing it off (middle 2 photos). He is generally either sleek or puffy but when he's super content is when the neck thing happens. He'd gotten some egg for breakfast and had been playing/hanging out and made his neck all fluffy because he was just super happy, I think. He is the oddest parrot I've come across. Just a little something different with him and some of the things he does....

Our DYH Amazon causes those same Ruffles to occur every time he is or has been rearranging or swapping-out his special hiding stash (that everyone knows about).

When he is very content, he does a full neck puff!

Mr. Ruffles, love the name.

Kiwi is far more handsome than the dude with ruffles!

You've captured some terrific poses!!

Mr. Ruffles says "Please Madam. More decorum when speaking of me. Eh, what?"

Great pics of a handsome BFA.

He is beautiful. I love the upside down head tilt - I’m adorable pose. Just melts my heart

Remarkable!

You're right, Mr. Wrench! Mr. Ruffles it is, eh, what? Pip pip, cheerio!

Maybe that's just him doing his best hawkhead impersonation? Add another talent to his growing list.

Hes looks so snuggleable! What a cutie!

Snuggly... lol. Ya, he's about as snuggly as a pit viper:eek::D:58:

Mr. Ruffles does not wish to be petted or cuddled on despite looking very much like he should be petted AND cuddled:mad::16: He does accept kisses though. Always into giving beakie kisses and occasionally into head kisses as well:) But no petting allowed and snuggles from his humans will not be tolerated!

Amy wants you to tell Mr Ruffles he doesn't know what he is missing! Amy allows me to pet his back and gently grab/wiggle his rudder. When he is in the mood for head skritches he can and does go for it for fifteen minutes..or MORE  to the point where his head is lying sideways on my leg, eyes closed, beaky slightly open,in heaven..actually...that was the very first he did that told me he was coming home with me.

When the breeder put Amy on my knee,he looked up at me ( Amy did..NOT the breeder! :p) then lowered his head until his beaky was touching my knee..I looked at the breeder with a  on my face, and he said HE WANTS YOU TO SKRITCH HIM!
Well...the rest is history lol.

Ruffles have ridges Kiwi!

He is such a cutie! I can't imagine him being a pit viper (NOT). I guess any BFA can show those traits. My Sam sometimes goes from cuddly green chicken to Atilla the Hun in a flash. Oh, the trials and tribulations of living with a parrot. Couldn't live without it. LOL

Any ideas why Julio hates cuddling so much? No clue about Kiwi's reasons...

We suspect Kiwi may have been parent raised (he never had a band and a sketchy history so no clue, he may even be older than we know and a wild caught though it's highly doubtful) or he was possibly abused/mishandled at some point or some combination of the 2. Not sure why he hates being loved on so much. We can extend his wings for clipping, Joe can hold him for pedicures, he [tolerates] the harness being put on... CLEARLY he understands we aren't going to harm him with our hands, yet he still never ever wants to be petted or snuggled. He reacts to any attempts to pet or hug him as though we're trying to set him on fire! It's terrible!

We are Julio's second family. The Dad had passed in his eleventh year and Mom's health was failing quickly to a point that she could not care for herself and Julio. The answer was a full-time housekeeper. It is my opinion that the housekeeper abused him.

Julio reacts to hands, but there is a want to trust. In a vehicle, he is much more accepting to hands. Clearly, they traveled often and over long distances as he loves to travel. He likely sees the SUV as a safe place, a place that the housekeeper never interactive (abused) him.
