Hi guys. This last couple of days I have noticed that Xander is moving left and right on his perches. Its kinda quick like a dance. he will take a few steps left and then right and do this for a few seconds while panting. When I say panting its something he does like a dog would do and he often does it when I grab his toys for him to bite or play with the last few days. He jumps forward to grab them and pants. He doesn't pant any other time but only like I say, when he is doing the dancing thing or we are playing. It doesn't seem like he is out of breath panting to my eyes but more of an exited pant. He will maybe pant 3 times like a heh heh heh sound.

Id like to know what the moving left and right means and the panting and then what the panting means when we are playing. I haven't noticed any real change in his behaviour or his appetite or anything exept he is playing with his toys a lot more than usual. This is just something extra he is doing now but he has been a little louder than usual too this last week but he is trying to say words all the time so I figure that its just because of that and there are a lot more birds around the house lately singing and chirping.

Ill see if I can get a vid of him doing this. I always over worry when he does something new x

The pacing worries me less and the panting more, unless it's mimicry.
My usual paranoia... VET TIME!

The panting only happens when I grab a toy and offer to play with him. He comes over like a dog and pants then and he does it with the moving left and right to.

He isn't panting any other time and is himself. He has been pretty active like usual today its just the new behaviour has freaked me out at first and I try to understand why he does this new thing.

I wander if he has just associated it with excitement as he is very excitable. Maybe I over react. If he plays with his toys on his own then he doesn't pant. I haven't panted either around him for him to mimic but he is trying to say so many things at the moment maybe he has picked it up. We can hear a couple dogs regular some neighbours have nearby. The little dance thing he does though I really have no clue. It wouldn't be hormonal because he isn't even 1 yet x

The pacing and panting would commonly be seen with the Wings lifted slight away from the body as a means of reducing body heat! Here, the pacing would move air around the body and the changing position of the claw would transfer more heat.

Discounting the above and it kind of sounds like a Behavioral related occurrence. Sadly, I do not have the experience with, nor is there enough cross-species understanding for me to even attempt to provide a behavior base for the activities.

Whether it is excitement in playing or something else, I just do not know! But, I believe that it is along the Behavior Side. With luck another owner will be along and provide deeper insight!

If that does not happen, and if you have a strong relationship with your Avian Vet, send them an email or call.

It has been alot warmer than usual today now the snow has gone and ive had the roof window open which obviously only opens a little. Maybe your right Steven. Has been slighty humid x

Well it could be the heat but also I think parrots can start doing weird things out of the blue. For instance Ollie started hissing every so often for the last week or so...but not when he is mad but when he is happy. Go figure...
