More outings with lucky

I just LOVE to see the macaws out and about. I wish more would take their birds for walks, they really enjoy it :)

Lovely lovely bird you have :)

I can't wait until it warms up so I can take Romeo out on the walks with Stephen.

Right now it's about 32F (0C). By Saturday we'll be down to 12F (-11C)

Just a WEE bit too cold for the birds. But Romeo DOES love card rides. So maybe we'll drive to the parrot store. (Stephen... does not like car rides so much.)

I take my macaws for car rides eventhough it's cold. The car heats up eventually and they really enjoy to see the landscape passing by.

I also take them out flying 3-7 times a week all depends on how much time I have. They are only out about 15-20 minutes each time and the flying keeps them warm.

As for Tino, who isn't able to fly and is very bare, I have made him a jacket for when we are outside. He actually gets more outside time, than the others, as I can have him with me, when I do the stables and he gets cheated a lot from the flight training (I do try to train him, but it will never be the same as when they can actually fly)

The jacket is made out of a material, which should be able to keep warm down to -22C and the outer material is water proof :)

I read somewhere that Walmart will not decline any customer access even with a macaw on their shoulder, just a thought :)

We don't have Walmart in Denmark, but most supermarkets have never said anything to me having a macaw on the shopping trolley or my arm. And if I go somewhere I haven't been before, I just go to the register and ask. Usually they say, as long as they don't frighten the other customers or make a mess, it's ok. I have had Sugar in H&M a few times :)

It's also great socializing for the birds as people will come up to you and ask about your bird, so hope you're not shy:18:

Actually the first day i got lucky had to go to wall mart at the time it was way to much for me and lucky it was with in a few hrs of having him ....beside that he dosent have a travle cage so my hubby has to drive and i have to sit in akward positions to make sure he is comphy had to do with all that tail lol ... a list of places we have been auto zone an older lady behind me said how beautiful and healthy he looked ,walmart, san deigo hrydro he leat a friend not only give him head scrathceys but let him hold him for a sec by far the biggest accomplishment towards socializing we've been able to make, subway and also just where i live in the Canyon i have to be care full if there are to many people he gets over excited and that can lead to a nip

I'm taking Romeo out tomorrow with a friend. She'll drive while I hold him. Because of the cold I'll wrap him up between the car and the building but we're going to the Parrot store to find him some snacks he'll eat that aren't just seeds and nuts. (He's got a super unhealthy diet in his head)

After that we'll hit the Home Depot for PVC to make a play stand assuming he can stand being there.

That seems like a lot to me. So we'll see how he does with it.

If you want any help with getting him to learn to fly, I have some experience in getting a macaw to fly :) They will probably never be as good as good as the ones, who have fledged naturally, but they are able to learn.

Here's Sugar, he has been flying for a little less than a year now

You will probably need to wait to start the serious flight training until he has more than 2 flight feathers. What you CAN do is start to build up some muscles in his chest. I did it by teaching him a command to flap his wings. I did this a few times a day for 3-4 months before we started "real" flight training.

That's great :)

Do you plan on having a harness on him? I would highly recommend you having a harness on him. If they get really scared, they WILL fly- clipped or not. Even in a Home Depot it could be dangerous to have a free roaming macaw :)
