Moody Miri...

I know I posted somewhere about having issues putting Miri in her cage at night but not sure where. Anyway...... With the "hand over the head" thing I've been doing recently, it seems to be paying off......The last 4-5 nights have gone without a hitch putting her up, no bites or nips at all!!! I always give her tons of praise for this and it looks to be working! :)

I never saw that thread, Wharf, but I'm glad you brought it up. Niko gets a nip in regularly when I put him back in his cage. :( Either a hard squeeze on my wrist or a good pinch on my arm (the fatty tissue...:30:).

I will try and hand over the head this evening and will see it that does the trick. :D

Just thought I'd update really quickly. Putting my hand over Niko's cage last night resulted in Niko flipping out on me.

BUT I found something that worked for me. As I'm putting him back in his cage, I raise up my other hand, so he watches my motions with the opposite arm he's standing on, distracting him from getting in that last word...I mean nip. :D

That's basically what I'm doing. I'm not touching her with the raised hand but it also keeps her from flying off my arm. :)

Niko sounds a lot like Salsa. When putting Sals in his cage I've used the opposite hand distraction method as well. It works, but I usually just grab his beak.

I will say that Salsa sure likes to make his own decisions about where he goes and when he goes there. He always has. I leave his cage door open when he's out during the day; he often climbs into his cage on his own when he feels like it. And he frequently makes the decision that he'd prefer to remain inside his cage for quite a while. Macaws can be so different from one another personality-wise...at least my 4 seem to be ;)

Yea, Rea and Miri's differences are pretty wide, you'd think same parents/breeder would matter but it doesn't. Deb's been trying to work with Miri as well but still has a ways to go with her. It just depends on Miri's mood at the time weather Deb can handle her or not. When Miri's in a good mood though, she is very sweet to the wife... but when she ain't look out!!!!

Not that I can remember, but she will try to bite down hard but the wife is pretty good at avoiding that now. It's pretty easy to tell when Miri doesn't want her touching her. The only downside is the words we "might" use when she does clamp down. :54::eek:
