Misting Question

Hello fellow members,
I was wondering how much do you mist your Amazon's. My Paco loves to get drenched, probably due to the dry air we have in my area at the moment. Is this okay? Because I have heard to just mist them until little water drops collect on their feathers, but he looks like drowned rat when he finally let's me know to stop lol. Let me know, and thanks in advanced.

I mist Salty 1 or 2 times a week. If he is into it, he snakes his head around to get it on his neck and eventually spreads his wings out to get them wet. He is soaked by the time we are done, and EVERY time, he will run into his cage and continue his bath in his water bowl. Just dont spray into his eyes or in his ear holes, thats a bad thing.

As long as Paco likes it and it isn't torture then it is OK. Make sure that you choose the time of day well and there is enough time to get dry at the warm part of the day and he is not sitting in a draft wringing wet.

we drench our birds when the weather is good,
whether they like it or not.

shower, pump up sprayer, garden hose...

They spend the day quietly drying,
then when they are completely dry, they start preening like crazy.

you have to slowly desensitize them to this,
but if they love already, all the better.

My YNA of 47 years takes a shower with me almost every day. Be careful not to put her under AC vent or other draft. And yes she looks like a drown rat.

NEVER! Just don't let them at any soaps of course and make sure it's not too hot for them.

Rio enjoyed coming in the shower, didn't bathe in his water dish and I didn't have a mister, but he would join me for a shower, often sitting on the towel rack for most of it but he's hop on my hand for a quick splashing. I just made sure he got a gentle drying with the towel on my lap after and that the place was warm enough for him. I think he preferred drying off more than the actual shower though.

You can get shower perches for them, they suction cup onto the wall and that's it!

When Amy was younger,she loved to get misted. ( My avatar picture is of her on her favorite shower branch) Now she takes a shower with me,hanging upside down from her perch stick flapping and yelling up a storm.
When she got misted I could go thru 3 bottles of water!

Not if they're OK with it. My DYH didn't like direct spray. My guess is most parrots don't, so I deflected the spray and stray water droplets hit him. He would get soaking wet.

Some hair dryers have deadly toxic PTFE's in them, so don't use one unless you're 100% sure it's safe. I never dried Gabby completely. It damages human hair, so I'm guessing it probably isn't very good for feathers either. I would blow dry him most of the way and then let him dry naturally.

Kizzy is more sensitive. She does not like getting into the shower with me. She made this abundantly clear a couple of days ago by flying away twice when I asked her to step down from the shower curtain rod and join me. Even deflected water is too intense for her. Instead, I use a water bottle, aim over the top of her head and let the very fine droplets do their thing. She loves this. Most Amazons love baths. You just have to figure out exactly what they like.

Yup, just keep experimenting to find the way you parrot likes it. SOme even like to taje rolling baths in a pile of wet leaves , like Kale. You soak the kale really well and put it on top of the cage. Some parrots just roll around on that, loving every minute. Gails RickeyBird likes to take baths in a shallow wok with a bit of water in it. Keep experimenting. Just no water directly into they eyes and ears.

Okay, thanks for all the information everyone. I always mist him heavily outside on a small fruit tree when the sun is warm. He also has plenty of leaves to hide under if he gets too warm.

My amazons and my big macs are all water birds... they do the wings open happy flappy dance when the water comes on...
