Hello :)

I received a bird toy from my sister in law today. It's the ActiviToys basketball toy and it has a mirror for the back of the toy. I think this is a toy either my cockatiel or budgie would enjoy but I'm concerned about them coming into contact with a mirror. I've read a lot of bad things about mirrors and I've seen them play out with my sister in laws cockatiel. He was a really sweet bird until he became obsessed with the bird in the mirror.

I was thinking about taking a Sharpie and coloring over the mirror part but I'm concerned about my bird trying to eat the Sharpie and poisoning itself. :/ I can't think of any way to cover the mirror so I can use it though.

Does anyone have any past experiences with using this mirror and how to make it work so that your bird doesn't come into contact with a mirror?

Not all birds react in this way and the only way you will find out is to try it. If it is becoming obsessed either restrict access or withdraw completely. Not keen on the Sharpie idea btw.

I'd say hang it in your cage and if it looks like it's becoming a problem for the bird, take it out.

I have that toy and also have similar concerns about mirrors with my cockatiel. But the mirror on that particular toy is so bad and so small I don't worry about it one bit. He's never shown much interest in it.

My IRN Harley doesn't have a mirror but my teil Walter is obsessed with his and he's really not at all friendly anymore. He hisses and lunges at us! Lol. I removed the mirror, then he just squeals and squeals! I put the mirror back, now he's happy! My IRN flys and sits by the fireplace mirror, then takes an active interest in toys and my head lol. So, I think each little birdy is different. But, Harley will not EVER have a mirror in his cage after what's happened with Walter. [emoji4]
