Meet my new baby ringy!

Meet Kiwi, my four month old ringy
I purchased her two days ago from a very bad home, she was in a 10” by 15” cage, had never been given real veggies or fruit, or been handled by her owners. She is very hand shy but she is oh so curious and starting to really feel more comfortable! Her new cage arrives today, 30” by 34” with a nice playpen on top. Last night I opened up her cage and she seemed hesitant but then saw me with an apple and ran right out of her cage awaiting food and I was elated. I left the cage open and she went in and out through the night and at one point even flied over to our piano while I was playing. I really look forward to seeing this little girl blossom with confidence. Wish me luck!! I’ve done my research but still I have zero experience with IRN’s so if you have any advice or tidbits of info I would really appreciate it. Attached are the photos I’ve managed to grab of her so far.

Welcome, Kiwi! She's beautiful! Thank you for releasing her from the cricket cage (?) she was living in and giving her the kind of home she deserves.

I completely understand you wanting to leave the doors of her cage open but that can be very dangerous especially when your little girl isn't familiar with her new home.

Alee I realize now that I worded that pretty silly! I didn’t leave her cage open throughout the night, it was left open while my husband and I spent time in the living room a few feet from her in hopes to slowly but surely get her used to our presence. Also thank you! I’m really excited to get her in her new cage and watch her flourish. I totally didn’t mention, her little cage was on the floor where she was living, so disgusted with that but her behavior so far seems promising.

Thank you, she’s a beauty! It seems that way, she is already speaking a little bit “hello kiwi” “what’s up” and “peekaboo”... I think she’ll be quite lively once warmed up.

Based on your experiences so far, it would appear that she had a very good Breeder and that she was likely properly weaned, transitioned to a wide selection of solid foods, and socialized. Guessing at the timeline, the prior owner had her for a fairly short time period.

Assuming that is somewhat true, she should blossom rapidly!

That is exactly what I’m thinking as well!! I wasn’t sure because the owner I got her from didn’t give me much good info but her behavior is showing me she hasn’t suffered much if any damage from her previous short term living situation which I am very pleased with. Thank you for the welcome, I’m happy to have found such a good place to discuss these things!

This was a picture the person sent me of her cage at her old house!! I’m In the process right now of adding sooo many more toys and perches and took a picture break then compared the photos and I started tearing up. I’m not sure who is happier, me or her.

Are you sure she is female? Talking that much that early sounds like you might have a bit on your hands

And yes! It sounds like your breeder put a lot of love and work in, which is great!

You make a great point! She isn’t sexed, I think myself and the previous owner have just assumed so far because of her/his markings. I’ll be pretty excited if I wake up one day and I can see a black ring on her.

From what I know, baby ringnecks do not have the ring so they cannot be visually sexed. I’ve never had a ringneck, so someone might correct me here.

A quick google search is telling me that a ring usually start appearing at around
17 months and isn’t super prominent until after two molts and that even some take until full sexual maturity to show (about three years). Not sure if I want to get kiwi sexed or not. :06:

I always recommend sexing; it's important in case of veterinary emergency in some cases, it helps understand your birds hormonal triggers, and it only costs $20.

Just called my vet to set a wellness appointment and he wants $70 to sex her, ugh that seems like too much but I agree and want it done.

I got in touch with her previous owner and that owner gave me the Breeder info!! I called the breeder and apparently SHE has already been sexed. They are forwarding me all of her information,

That's great! Also having it done by a vet is always more expensive than doing it yourself since they have to pay everyone in the clinic and all the bills

From my limited experience, ringnecks do enjoy space!!! And they aren't always happy when others invade it! But they are still such inquisitive creatures!
