This past weekend we drove several hours to pick up our new addition, Ash, a female whiteface cinnamon pearl pied cockatiel from a breeder. She has been settling in now for a few days and is hand-tame, fully flighted and a sweet 3 month old baby born in May 2019. She is such a beauty and I can't wait to start bonding with her
She is fully flighted and so after day 2, I let her out of the cage with Ember on my shoulder. She took off flying around the living room, and being unfamiliar in the space (and not bonded to me) she did bump lightly into a few things then taking off again before I managed to gently scoop her up from the floor in tiredness and put her back in her cage. Ember came to me with clipped wings which definitely helped us bond (and he wasn't flying away from me constantly) so I'm thinking about it with her, mostly for her safety. I was so scared she would hit something too hard. So it was a little chaotic with her frantically flying but otherwise she is adjusting well and eating and drinking normally. Thankfully the breeder and I serve the same food s -- Zupreem fruit pellets and Higgins Safflower seed mix.
Our setup -- Ash in the far left cage, Ember in middle, Boo & Rue share the right side. While quarantining is something I suggest it is just not possible in our house but I trust my breeder and she'll be going to the vet soon anyway for her first checkup. My dream in the future is to have Ember and Ash pair up and share the left side of the cage together, but even if they don't take to each other I'm okay with that too.
Ember is a little jealous of how many pictures I've been taking of his new flock mate and not him, so he had to get in for a picture too he's totally smiling!
