Mating season

I keep hearing about birds trying to mate with their humans. Do all birds do this, is there a difference between male and females? I'd really prefer Peanut to continue thinking of me as her mom and not her mate. I don't want my precious Peanut turning into Peanut The Pervert.

They have baby Amazons at the pet store, maybe I should get her a friend while she's still young and not territorial of anything. Amazons are small and not that much trouble right, what would one more bird hurt?

If you consider what is natural, as perverted. Life is going to have a ton of surprises in the road ahead.

FYI: Your just kidding regarding Amazons just being 'small' and have couple is simple! You need to visit a larger Recuse and see what happens with assumptions are made regarding Amazons and Parrots in general.

Don't worry, I'm not going to run out and get an Amazon. But if I were to get a second bird that would be my choice and I was wondering if it helps with the mating issues and if it's better to introduce a second bird when the other one is still young.

I have a Newfoundland, basset hound, pit bull and a late golden retriever RIP. I don't buy pets without knowing what I'm getting myself into.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of hard-hearted, but if that was scolding, okay!

Parrots and Dogs are not the same World at all! Dogs want to be part of the pack. With Parrots, its all about Trust! After all, things eat them and they are smart enough to understand that reality. And the family of Amazons are very smart and will wait for the Human to prove that they are the real thing! Most people who do not have an understanding of Parrots and especially Amazons choose based on how pretty they are and that commonly goes away after the first chop on their fingers.

The issue is rarely 'mating,' but far more commonly the hormonal drivers and limiting /controlling them!

Recently, a member obtained two sisters and is living the joy of those two girls working against each other and with each other! I believe that they would tell you, if they had it to do all over, they wouldn't have gotten the girls. Two can mean far more than simply twice the effort!

Right! The 2 could hit it off smashingly and basically you might be left out in the cold.
3 things can happen with a second parrot:

1) Nothing. You will be stuck with your original problem. And hoping the new parrot does not develop some other bad habit.

2) They hate each other, and now you have to limit out of cage time by 1/2 so they dont kill each other

3) They love each other, to the exclusion of you and humans in general. Happens quite often. You might never regain the level of intimacy you had with your original parrot.

But you will always have 2x the food bill, 2x the vet bill, 2x the cage costs, 2x the toy costs.

Kiwi never tried mating with us, but he would hump the air and grunt and put on a big ol' display trying to get our attention. We simply ignored the behavior every single time. Turned our backs and if possible, left the room. He got the picture too. He does get hormonal in the spring (which is natural and normal) but he doesn't do his humpy mating dance anymore because it wasn't encouraged or acknowledged as something we were any kind of interested in. As for getting him a she-blue front? Not in a million years!

There is never any guarantees 2 birds, even of the same species and opposite sexes, will get along. And if they don't, then you have *2* horny and/or aggressive parrots vying for your attention during that time of year Not to mention the very real possibility of baby parrots, of which most pet owners are wholly unprepared and ill equipped to raise.

The thought has passed about getting another parrot. At least until I go back to that pet store. It's been there for 40 years and I never knew they had birds until now, I always thought it was a reptile/fish store. Now every time I go in there they always have different baby birds that are near irresistible. But Peanut is well behaved all on her own so far so I'd be really pushing my luck to get another one.

Also I was kidding about calling it perverted. I know the birds do it and the bees do it. If any of them are perverted it's the rabbits. Obviously my male and female rabbits are fixed or I'd have 10,000 bunnies in my yard.

No judgement here. I call kiwi a pervert, creeper etc... Of course he only does what comes naturally and/or doesn't intend to come across as a creeper. Doesn't make it any less awkward and uncomfortable for those of us without cloacas to witness though:08:
