Toying with the idea of getting a mate for Soleil. I'm not jumping on the first one that comes my way (already turned one down). Would it be best to find a male close to her age (8) or start off with a baby? I spoke with a breeder out of state and she recommended a baby. I spoke with a different breeder, different location and she recommended one around 3-5yrs. Two different opinions, 2 different breeders, both different states. What are your thoughts?

Assuming you are okay with her bonding to this other bird and wanting to be with her mate more than she wants to be with you, I would go for one that is closer to her age. It would be easier for them to bond if they are similar in maturity I assume.

I'm ok with her bonding to the mate. I want her happy, more than anything. :)

Do YOU want another pet?

IRNs are not pair bond birds, so she probably won't "bond" to another IRN the way you expect. In fact even if she does bond during one part of the year, she may turn on and kill it later in the year.

The only way I would suggest adding another IRN is if YOU want another one, even if you have to protect that bird from Soliel every day of his or her life, because that is a much more likely outcome from adding a second one than her being happier.

Thank you! This was the kind of answer I needed. Mentally, I couldn't handle it if she killed her mate. I knew I'd have to keep separate cages. The possibility of her not liking the mate was another thing I considered. I think I'll just stick with the one :)

I love IRNs and I'm not against anyone having lots, but usually they tolerate each other at best, kill each other at worst.

I'm too much of a sensitive sap to even imagine her killing. I'm also realistic. I could handle having a second IRN, but with Soleil's current "Goddess complex" I can envision it not ending well.

Well Soliel is lucky to have a reasonable human who is willing to look at the risks instead of an overly romantic human that will just try whatever they want and disregard risks :) more parrots should have humans like you!

That's why I love this place, you get people with LOTS of experience with all different species of parrots to give you the real deal. Thanks SilverSage, great advice.

Thank you SilverSage :) Her happiness is my happiness. I'm not willing to risk the life of another to satisfy a curiosity, hence the asking and not jumping on the first available IRN. Anyone in Maine that does get in to breeding IRNs will dominate the state lol. They are so rare here.
