March's POTM Theme is

"What's in a Name?"

blog_featured-image_twitter_question_mark.png

This month is a little different! For this contest, we want to hear the story of how your bird got their name or nickname.
We know there are many rescued and rehomed birds who came to us with their name, so nicknames you have given them make a great story as well.

Any picture of your bird is fine (as long as it follows the rules for safety, etc).

The contest will run through March 29th, and a poll for voting will go up then. The winner will be announced on April 1.

The winner will receive a Supporting Membership for a year,
and their photo & story will be on the forum home page for the month of April.
One official entry per person, but you can add as many Just for Fun entries as you want!
Please make sure to specify which one is your official entry.

Examples:

This is Talli, and he was my husband's first bird.
His whole name is Metallica (Reg is a huge fan!) but we only call him that if he is doing something he shouldn't!
Otherwise, he is just Talli.

This is Jax. He came to us with his name, but we always call him Green Green.
His best buddy Phoe actually gave him his nickname as that's what it sounded like when he called for him, and it stuck.

LOL! This made me laugh because the look on her face totally fits with her wondering if she looks like him!
I love Kise's name, and think it fits her perfectly.

Parker’s name when he came to me was Porker. While he was well loved in his prior home, he definitely got rescued from that name. We named him Parker as a name similar to his own, since he was often saying his old name.

And of course the photo is reversed :headwall: In this photo he’s actually upside down on my hand giving me a kiss.

Parker is such a perfect name for your handsome boy, I can't even imagine him as Porker. I love how you only changed his name a little as well, but that it made such a huge difference! Does he now say Parker?

I adore this picture of you two, so nice to see you in the picture with him!

The story is a bit long
Me with my familly visited a zoo where I saw hanging parrots for the first time. They were the most adorable to my mum. There also was a poster with bats - two of them were upside down and one in (un)normal position. One of these hanging was saying "Zenek passed out!". After this trip my mum started calling all hanging parrots "Zeneks". She also wanted them to home but they are rarely met in aviculture.
A year later we got a conure. The first day he was walking in his Cage upside down and mum said "Zenek, Zenek!" ...and later we gave him this name

I love this story of how Zenek got his name, and I bet your Mom loved that you named him that! Zenek is such an awesome name, and I am so happy to hear the history behind it:)

And we are off to an amazing start, Terry! Fabulous theme and already 3 beautiful stories with awesome images to match! I see another home run here my friend!

I knew Parker's name story, but had no idea about Kise and Zenek. Not only an inspirational theme, but educational as well!!
I tip my hat to you my friend!!

Zenek is such a cutie-pie.
This is a very cool story. We do a lot of giving different names to things in my house. Your story brought a big smile to me face. :D

Thank you, Scott! I am so happy that we are off to such a wonderful start!

So I think the picture and the name says it all.

After getting Luna (Bird on right) and seeing how much interest she had watching youtube video of her species I knew I had to get a second.

Did not think of the problems two nearly identical birds would create.

:green1: :green1:

Darn I will have to find another way to post the same picture twice.

I named my GCC Ta-dah! Because from the first moment it is clear she likes to make a big entrance! She always lands with aplomb!!! Aplomb or Ta-dah explains it best. She's like Bam here I Am!! And then she cranes her neck to look at you and see if you are impressed! Ta-dah is also what she is thinking when she escapes her cage at mommy and me time ( if forgotten, 830 pm).
If I don't get her out if the cage at 830, then she flys through the dark house to land on me Ta-dah! 3 different cages, zip tied all doors, very narrow bar spacing. I don't know how;?! She never gets out at any other time.....

His name is "Sludge", ladies and gentlemen!

lamanuka-albums-mars-birds-picture20773-sludge-monster.jpg

This is Sludge, our previous purple crown, pictured circa 1998. We originally named him "Roger" but weren't really happy with that. One night while watching a major football match with commentary provided by a well known Australian comedy duo, we heard them use the nickname "Sludge" for one of the players. As everyone here knows, lorikeets are infamous for what is produced from their rear ends, so the name was deemed appropriate, and way more fun :)

Sadly, I can't see your picture:(

I love a name that matches a bird's personality! Ta-dah is a Superstar and definitely lives up to her name!

His name is "Sludge", ladies and gentlemen!

What a great name! Sludge was so beautiful, and his name could not have been any more appropriate. I love y'all's sense of humour!

since my previous attempt at a photo did not work I will put up this one.
Same subject my two Green Cheek Amazons whom I refer to as.
the Twins.

Neptune Blue,
Because I love the sea, and because I saw a picture of the planet Neptune and it was the most amazing BLUE!! I had considered naming him Rain man.
laurasea-albums-neptune-blue-picture21910-img-20191007-095946153.jpg

Penny, because when I saw her stuffed in a tiny travel cage only inches larger than her body , and in which she couldn't stand up in because it was so small. She was covered head to toe in her own poop, with piles of poop in her cage, with her water covered in a film of algae. She was screaming, self mutilating, plucking, trying to bite.

I thought to myself , in for a Penny in for a pound.

Definition of in for a penny, in for a pound
British
—used to say that a person should finish what he or she has started to do even though it may be difficult or expensive
"If you want to quit, I'll understand." "No, I'm sure we can do this. In for a penny, in for a pound."

I thought she would be vicious, and take a lot of work. But she is a very sweet and funny bird, has the biggest sense of humor of any of my birds. She did take some work, mostly to engage her in life, to learn to fly, she still gets scared and lunges if I move quickly, but she pushes my hand away instead of bites now. I love her so much. I found get on a shelf in dark corner of a mom and pop store who was letting an employee re-home her. I wasn't looking for another bird, but I had to save her! I had to borrow money from two people to buy her. So worth it! I will make her my official entry!

I wanted to post a photo here just for the heck of it. Who cares about winning?

But there is no way I can explain how Archie got his name without creating problems here, and the story is unbelievable!

This is my budgie, North.
She came to me the name Norm (previous owner though she was male)

I wanted to attend Green Mountain college, one of the dorm halls I could have stayed in was North Hall. Since the college closed and I was devastated, I decided to name her after one of the buildings. Out of all the names, North fit her most.
Yep, she was named after dorm hall.
