I assumed Rich is a female based from some comments when I showed her picture in some forums in the internet. but sometimes when she is excited she also displays the heartshaped spreading of her wings. What are other characteristics of an IRN (even as young as 5-6 months) which can differentiate a male from a female ringneck?

The females also do the heart shaped wing but instead of strutting whilst doing it they usually arch their back as if a mating ritual and drop their heads.

Honestly, best bet is to get a DNA test done.

A lot of people claim they can tell male/females apart, and granted, long term breeders etc will have a good eye for it. But they can still be wrong :)

Merlin also gets excited and opens his wings in the heart shaped, they are more likely to 'rub' themselves against you, or strut. Whereas like amanda said, females will drop their heads (although Merlin does this for a good scritch!) and expose their bootay.

Merlin is DNA'd male, but can act the diva too. So, go get a dna test! ;)
