A local petshop closed down and was selling their birds for dirt cheap.
parakeets were $5, cockatiels for $6 or three for $10. I have been rescuing unwated birds like crazy on craigslist lately because people that bought cheap birds with problems no longer want them.
After the birds were all sold, the store brought out their private breeders from a colony that lived in a shed outside of the store.
Some of my friends bought them and months later, lacerations are still squirting blood.
All of the cockatiels are missing limbs, broken wings, have no toes, major wounds that wont heal.
I am all maxed out on how many I could rescue.
Now, the pet shop owner has listed 150+ cockatiels in need of a home.
I also found out that the owner was trying to force bigger birds to breed by putting them in tiny cages so they have nothing to focus on but breeding, which is how the cockatiels all ended up injured by landing on the cages. The cockatiels were all free to fly around the shed uncaged, so the place is disgusting and they probably have diseases and mites.
I almost wish I could adopt all of them just to have them put down.
Also, when they closed, I purchased a sun conure that wasnt even weaned! I posted on craigslist offering to hand feed peoples unweaned birds from the store and I found 5 people whos birds werent weaned.
And to think, this was a store that always told me what to do with my birds. The owner was a know it all and told me my rescue was plucking because it needed a mate. My amazon hated other birds and he plucked because his owner died.
anyways, everyone locally knows about the abuse and yet no one does anything about it.
Is this something that can be reported? Can I get other people to petition with what they witnessed etc?
and what can I do about the cockatiels, is it wrong of me to euthanize all 150+? I dont know what to do and I'm tired of people sitting around allowing this greedy person to start a new business!
