Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
So, this morning I came downstairs to find that Maggie had snapped the hinges that held one of the double doors to her $1,000.-ish Kings Double Macaw cage.

Now mind you, this thing IS heavy duty. It's not at all poorly designed.

She's just THAT powerful. Snapped the hinges the way she snaps blocks of wood.

I had to tie that one off and close it, and use the second door.

Fortunately she has a second door, and it's still actually on the cage.

For the moment...

This is the same bird that routinely licks my eyeballs (and Sarah's), preens my beard, holds my fingers in her beak when I scratch her head, and beak wrestles with me nose to beak...

At the same time she is that powerful, she is also that gentle...

BUT I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT SHE COULD...

JUST AS I HAVE ABSOLUTE FAITH THAT SHE NEVER WOULD...

And THAT is macaw ownership...

I have no idea how I'm going to lock her in on cleaning day now...

Or if the other door will still be on the cage when I get home, now that she's figured it out...

Even with no doors on the thing she won't go back in it...

Her eight years in solitary apparently left a lasting impression.

But those are some thick heavy duty hinges she snapped!

Ooops! I'm glad I know good and well Zoe isn't that strong. Good job Maggie!

Yeah, Maggie is only slightly smaller than a Hy, and every bit as powerful.

I guess stainless isn't an option for her either. I mean, if I were to actually cage her, that is... which I don't, except for about 3 hours one day a week to mop floors... SPOILED ROTTEN BIRD!

LMAO! She has you trained :)

She already tore the treat cup latches off that cage, so she can swing the doors out and "eat on the terrace"...

She almost never voluntarily goes INTO her cage. Now, Lila and Tusk wander around inside that thing all the time. Not Maggie. It's playstand, or cage top. I am not taking ANY chances of getting locked up ever again!

She hates it that much!

Wow, I can't even imagine that kind of strength! I am so glad that my smaller guys can't do that:)

Yeah, I'm actually fortunate that mine, for the most part, are quite content to stay put and destroy their toys. Up until now, other than the occasional (unscrewing) cage disassembly, and the aforementioned treat cup door latches, I've been spared the expense of a macaw discovering how much fun popping cage welds can be...

I hope this is just a phase...

Depends on how much fun it was! Hopefully it was not as exciting as she thought it would be...otherwise?
Uh oh.

Uh oh.

Otherwise?!

Well, I've been considering going cageless for awhile now. I only close cage doors for cleaning purposes anyway...

Otherwise means I no longer have a choice in the matter. Can't buy stainless steel cages on a mac and cheese budget...

But I can make some pretty cool giant playstands, and I suspect my birds won't really care.

I wish I could get to you Valentino's SS cage. However I think even though it is extremely well made it will be too small for your Maggie. If Valentino escapes from it I am sure your flock would too.

I paid a lot of money for that cage in 2002 you would think the little suckers would not be able to escape from it. However every once in a while I will come home and find Valentino on his tree or be greeted with a good morning landing on me while I am sleeping. His feather type makes him almost a silent flyer.
