Mack the Knife-BFA
I have been meaning to share this for a while, but as king of the procrastinators just got around to it. A while back I bought Mack some of those cheap Chinese carabiners that everyone uses for keyrings. As you can imagine, they lasted about two days. But he loved playing with them,so I bought more...and more....and more. Finally I wised up and shelled out a fair amount of coin of the realm for some good ones. That was two months ago. Fast forward to today, and he still has the three that I bought him,and despite his attacks(which average 30min to an hour a day) they are hanging in there. If you have never offered these to your bird,do so posthaste. They have all the stuff necessary...spring loaded, shiny, mobile. Here is a vid I did on Youtube..

I will be the first to CAUTION anyone who considers letting their fids play with those.

Even IF they are made of SS, the spring load mechanism 'can' hurt the bird.

IF not made of SS (but cheaply painted), the bird can ingest potential harmful metals and paints (and still get hurt by the spring load mechanism).

I also had a bad experience with those. A young OWA got the lower part under the lower beak and probably wouldn't have survived if someone haven't been there to save her. It got hooked under her beak and she panicked when she couldn't escape.

Mine are Stainless, and the mechanism is completely recessed into the body of the carabiner.I do agree with Wendy about never using painted ones.Even the cheapies I started with were anodized aluminum.

Even if the mechanism is recessed, if a bird gets the latch part open, the end can get caught up underneath the lower mandible like henpecked had happen to one of his fids.

If your bird has a fascination with messing with these- get the locking type and screw it shut.....or just don't let them play with it in the first place.
