My Macaw died of old age and am looking for a bird. I want to have a smaller one maybe Alexandrine
I called the banding number and they told me they didn't know what this number ment. She told me to call the lab number I did due to gov. shutdown no help. So does anyone know of a number on a silver band that has numbers like this TRT FL 2445 (the FL is sideways) just trying to seek history on this bird. Could the TRT be the breeder, the FL be the state and the born year 2005 the 4 month and the 4 day?? Thanks I was told he was 8 so I thought the 5 would have been the year.

Hello JoJo!

I had done some prior research on legbands, and I wanted to share some information with you. It seems that the banding system is not as.... streamlined and consistent as I recalled it being.

Tracing your band on parrot, parrot band, Why do breeders band, crimson bellied conures, lady gouldian finch for sale, gouldian fiinch for sale in AZ
(Information on why birds are banded, and how to read a band)

parrot breeders and band numbers, tracking your bird band
(A list with many identified brands... TRT was not on there, sorry!)

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/LegBandNumbers/join
(A recommended Yahoo list to join to help ID the breeder through a wider dedicated network)

http://www.avianweb.com/legbands.html
(More info on Bands, including how to identify if it was not a domestic bred bird... I see this is the place with the Government number which may not be open as you said due to the shut down)

I hope this helps a bit! It's a lot of info, but gives you more to poke at ^^ Best of luck! My Macaw has no band... so I am at a disadvantage for getting more info on her :C

I'm thinking the intials are for the breeder, FL for Florida, and number is the number attributed to that bird ( he was the 2445 th bird to hatch/been sold). I don't think it has anything to do with the day and year of hatch as it is hard to predict the exact day of every bird in advance ( takes a while to have the bands made, you need them ready before the babies hatch).

Here is the information I have for tracing leg bands.

If your breeder is listed, you might be able to find them here... (there were two previous sites that had a lot of information about leg bands on them, but have since been closed down)
New Leg Band Registry

A YH group that helps trace bands LegBandNumbers : Leg Band Numbers

A few places that produce leg bands may or may not help trace the band if it's one of theirs...
L_M_Bird Leg Bands Products Catalogue
Red Bird Products
DL Products - Leg Bands, Bird Bands, Bird Rings

Winged Wisdom Pet Bird Magazine - The ABC's Of Leg Bands - Identifying Birds

I checked the national leg band registry, and came up empty.

That band was apparently never registered by the breeder. Check with L&M and see who purchased it from them. That is probably one of theirs...
