Macaw foot peeling

I adopted my macaw, in fact, my first large parrot.

He’s a 6-year-old male.

I noticed his talons are kind of peeling. Does anyone know if this is a concern? What does it mean?

He was eating fruit pellets with seeds and nuts.

I'm no large parrot expert, but I wonder if his feet are dry and that's why his feet are peeling? Give him spray baths or take him into the shower if he'll let you (and if you're not already doing that!). Could be he just needs the extra moisture.

I apply coconut oil to my parrots claws once in a great while (usually in winter when it’s drier).

I moisturize my macaw’s feet. Once upon a time I tried using aloe juice from an aloe leaf, but it didn’t keep his feet moist for long. I use La Roche Posay Lipikar AP+. Turns them glossy black. He may be pushing 50, but he doesn’t look a day over 2 when his feet are moisturized. Behold the before and after:

Update. Took him to the vet today, and they said it’s highly likely mites. He got an ivermectin injection and will have another one next week.

This is what his foot looks like, so you guys can have a reference. The picture in the first post didn’t clearly show the patches. It looks like athletes foot.

He also had scratches on his cheek skin, so it’s very likely mites. However, we can’t be 100% sure since they are too tiny to see.

I love coconut oil for this purpose too. I have to do something natural. Nico shoves his nails, and claws in his nostrils & beak
