I took Louise to see the vet because she's laying eggs every 5 days now. He said she has to completely change her schedule and routine to get out of the breeding mode. She is to be alone in her cage in another part of the house for several days. She is to have a minimum 12 hours of darkness every day. No toys, no music, no stimulation of any sort. She saw him this morning and he said no food until tomorrow afternoon then her regular diet. While she was in his office she actually laid an egg. Wow she was really showing off. ;) He explained how even though her diet is very good and she's receiving supplements parakeets aren't made to lay eggs at that rate. She will either deplete herself of calcium, which I've been giving her, or she will become egg-bound and die. She's now alone in the dark and I feel so,so sorry for her. Frankie, however, is living it up in their cage. He's singing, playing with toys and eating up a storm. I pray this will help her because I do really love that little girl.:blue2::whiteblue:

That's a lot of eggs! I suggest giving her a lot of calcium rich foods and supplements during this time. With my budgies, they're too lazy to chew on their cuttlebones and mineral blocks so it's not enough that I have those in their cage. I also sprinkle a calcium / phosphorous powder in their dry food. Approved by their A-Vet.

Hope your girl gets back to non egg laying mode soon :)

I've been giving her calcium powder plus she gets fresh broccoli, cauliflower and carrots every day plus various fruits that are in season. In addition she takes a supplement called Missing Link Avian Formula that is filled with all that she doesn't get in her food. Right now she's all alone in the back bedroom and Frankie is singing and chattering his head off in the kitchen. She is making a few little peeps but I'm sure she's wondering what the heck happened. :whiteblue::blue2:
