Hello, I am considering a conure as a pet. I am a musician and play guitar and drums. I also host a jam weekly at my place. I am wondering if conures are sensitive to noises. I don't normally play too loud but I don't no what kind of volume levels would affect the birds. Any musician bird owners out there?
thanks
Steve

I'm not a musician, but my guess, is that they will probably like it and try to compete by making more noise! My experience has showed me that they like to make noise when you make noise. I've noticed my birds have liked to chatter or make noises when I talk on the phone, shower, do dishes, vacuum, etc.

They just need enough time at night where it's quiet so they can get enough sleep.

In my experience birds love loud noises and music ! My conure and eclectus will "dance" and head bob to music I play when I'm at the computer. My conure prefers punk rock and pop while my Ekkie LOVES 80s music and techno LOL it's cute. I agree with the person above your bird will probably have a lot of fun with you an your band/music, and will probably join in!

Your bird would love that you are a musician! He'll sing along when you play your music. As long as your music isn't too horribly loud when he's trying to sleep or something, then I wouldn't worry! :)

I am a guitarist and a Jenday owner. Guido loves it when I play guitar, especially if I play ac/dc :D He doesn't try to compete with the music but he will "sing" and bob his head with the music.

That's great news!

I know stupid question but any problems with cat interaction? I do have a cat but she is very shy and would probably be scared of the bird. I wouldn't leave the bird unsupervised around the cat.

Hope he likes Johnny Cash!
cheers

Yes, major problems. Just a little scratch from your cat's claws/mouth can be fatal to the bird. So definitely never keep them around each other unsupervised and just realize that even a small, innocent encounter can be fatal to the bird (even if the cat gets the worst of it injury-wise!). There are people who have birds and cats that live together harmoniously, though, just be careful.

And my bird is also one who likes music and noises. He will dance and bob and yell when we sing to him. Just don't play late at night when your guys is asleep!

Eh… I wouldn’t really listen to other peoples opinions on cats and birds, people will be very quick to freak out to the max and tell you there is no way you can have a cat around a bird. Honestly it depends on your cat. You know your cat better then anyone, obviously if it hunts and brings you dead presents, it will probably try and attack your bird. If it’s lazy and laid back it may be interested at first but will probably leave it alone, especially if the bird bites him a few times. When I had my lorikeet I held him near my cat and let him bite my cat on purpose LOL it was funny. he bit him once on the ear and my cat never went near him after that cause he was lazy and scared.

So it depends on what your cat is like.

Only tip I would give is not to have flighted birds in a house with cats. I don’t know what it is, maybe the flapping sound peaks their curiosity and instinct but when my cat hears a bird flapping around or flying he will come RUNNING from what ever room his in and stare at it until it lands, if I left them unsupervised I know my cat that has never hunted would eat the bird. When they have clipped wings my bird doesn’t seem to take notice of them.

Well...my cat is an indoor cat and it took her about 20 mins to kill a spider, so I think the bird would be ok. I wouldn't leave it unsupervised though.
thanks

3 of my 4 cats would love to eat my birds. The one is totally petrified of birds and is the only one I allow in the room when I have them out. He hides under the bed and occasionally will come out and hang out but he acts very skittish around them. He'll lay on the bed while I have one of the conures out and he's totally cool with it. He'll snuggle into my side while the bird sits on my chest.

It all just depends on your cat. See how she reacts to the bird in the cage. The 3 that would eat my birds will also scale the cages if I let them. They're banned from the room.

My mom has 2 cats and she's trained them (or something) to leave her birds and rat alone. They are hunters, but they seem to know her pets from wild ones. She's not as careful as I would be, but somehow her cats seem to never go after them. They'll stare at them occasionally, but not attack.

I'd be very careful, but it can be done. :)
