Lost three birds in two years… I’m heartbroken

I was wanting to reach out for some pointers, today my precious Patagonian Conure who I adopted from a trusted friend died. She was on the bottom of her cage, fine yesterday and dead this morning. It looked like her neck was purple and red and jutting out, so I’m wondering if she has a night fright and snapped her neck on the way down… the only thing is, I’ve had two other birds die the last two years, a dusky conure who was just a baby and I suspect had some developmental issues due to being raised on a poor diet. The other was a GCC named Paco who I loved to bits. I still don’t know what happened just that he died. Those two birds I got from petco.

I just feel like a terrible bird owner. I feel I’ve done everything right and yet I’ve lost so many birds in such a short amount of time. I feel sick and like I’ve failed them. It is worth noting I have four other birds who are fine.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas on what could’ve happened? Or anyone who has been through this too? I’m wrecked

Welcome to the forums, @Gbirdie05, though I am so sorry for the dreadful circumstances that brought you here. I feel your pain, I lost two "heart" birds in relatively quick succession, one a green cheeked conure named Baci in mid-2018 and another, a purple-crowned lorikeet called Lilly in early 2022, and to this very day I still cry over one or both of them on an almost daily basis. I lost Baci before becoming a member of this community, it was in fact his loss that brought me here, and as utterly devastating as it was to lose Lilly, it was just that much more bearable because by that time I was here, and the support, love and empathy shown by the membership here made a world of difference. So I'm very glad you found us, and I hope that being here will help you too.

You are NOT a bad owner!! Birds are so resilient in many ways but fragile in many others, and they mask the symptoms of illness all too well, even from the most attentive of parronts. It is so much easier to blame ourselves at times like this, when often the real cause is so hard to pin down. I couldn't possibly tell you what happened to your birds, you could have your avian vet perform a necropsy, they are not always 100% conclusive but it may help to give you some closure. But I know how you feel, @Gbirdie05, and so will many others here, and I'm so glad you're here because you are among friends now, who will all understand how very much you are hurting. Please accept my deepest condolences, I am so terribly sorry for your losses 💔

Hey, there I have had a Patagonian for 40 years.
I guess I consider myself a quasi-expert on these rare giant conures.
Here's my blurb.
