2 x rainbow lorikeets. Pistachio is a normal coloured 1 1/2 yo birdie who's currently on a diet and Zazu is my grey/green or olive baby, about 4 moths old
Hi all, just wondering how everyone keeps their lorikeets cages from smelling foul? I have 2 lorikeets sharing a space, their newspaper is changed daily, and their cage is cleaned (taken outside and high pressure hosed) every weekend. Within a day or two, their cage absolutely stinks again.

Does anyone have any suggestions on stopping this smell? They're inside birds, kept next to our kitchen so the smell is certainly an issue.

Thanks, B

I have one Green Naped Lorikeet and I clean his papers out every day sometimes twice a day I wipe the sides and bottom down also every other-day sometimes everyday. I spray a half lemon juice half water mist in the birdroom every day to freshen it up and when the weather is nice I open up the garage door in my birdroom so they get fresh air and more sunshine you can open the windows since Im assuming your birds room doesnt have a garage door :p if the weather is crappy though and I can open the door for a coup[le days it does still stink a bit so I dont know what else might help :/

Really? What are you feeding them? My boss has two lories and their cages are cleaned twice a week and I have never noticed an odor. We do use pine wood shavings in the bottom of their cages because it absorbes a lot of their moisture (from poos and baths) and they eat a good quality powdered lory nectar.

I think it might have something to do with what you are feeding them. Even though you spray the cage down, some parts of the cage may still retain the odor. I haven't had a problem with cage odor with my lory. I feed her Nekton-Lori nectar.

Hi All!

Thanks for your replies.

They're currently being fed Paswell Complete Lorikeet as a dry mix (they wont touch it wet) plus celery/corn/carrot/any other veggie or fruit I can find, although Zazu is just not interested in fruit at all, sweet doesn't seem to be his thing which I find weird.

Previous to this they were fed Avione, however I switched from that after reading that it has quite a bit of sugar in it.

Any suggestions on food that might be better would be greatly appreciated - I am in Australia so any available here would be even better!

One thing to note, this problem seems to have come since we've had the second bird, Zazu. Prior to that, the cage never stunk at all.
