Looking to pair up a yellow-naped Amazon

I would like to find a “friend” for my Amazon.

I’m thinking another Amazon or another parrot species of the same size, would reduce the risk of injuries (if they fight).

My concerns are as follows:

1. ILLNESS. I plan to have any new parrot quarantined 30-90 days before bring it home.

2. INJURIES from fighting

3. NOISE. I live in a small apartment. Will two Amazons mean twice the amount of noise?

4. BREEDING. I would rather not have them breeding in my small apartment. Also, with so many parrots needing homes, I don’t want to bring more unwanted parrots into the world.

Thanks in advance for any information!

First off, welcome to the forums. Secondly, getting another bird as a companion for your current bird in the wrong reason to get another bird. This is because most birds are territorial and there's a great possibility they will not get along. Get another bird because you want another bird and are equipt to care for a second bird.

And yes, two birds are definately noisier than one bird. If your living in a small apartment with a parrot of any kind and you haven't received an eviction notice I wouldn't press my luck.

I live in a house and share it with a Senegal (touted to be an apartment bird) and an Eclectus and I still worry about the neighbors whose house is only 25 feet from mine. They do have their noisy moments through out the day. I know if I were in an apartment, I would have received an eviction notice long ago.

Good luck with your decision and choice.

Thanks for the feedback.

My yellow-nape has spent most of her life with a cockatiel “friend.” They were housed side-by-side, in their own cages. My cockatiel passed away about a year ago at the age of 20 years. I’m sure she misses him (she calls his name every day).

I’m reluctant to get another cockatiel because of their small size, and the risk of being injured by a much larger Amazon. I always kept them separated and supervised, but accidents do happen.

Welcome to the forum. It's been my experience that hens you've had for 22 yrs don't take well to new hens. I'm with Mike, don't get another zon for your zon, if you want another pet ,fine. Your older zon is happier with you as a mate than another bird. I think a nother tiel would be a great choice as a second bird, and your hen wouldn't see it as a threat . just my 2 cents worth.

I'll reconsider getting another cockatiel. They make excellent companions.

Thanks!
