Poppy - Crimson Bellied Conure
Hi all, my fiance and I have been looking at breeders around here and there are only the sun and jenday conures. Personally I love both though the jenday seems to be cheaper.

We had thought about getting a Quaker parrot but they only seem to bond with one. I heard conures were more fun and loving.

I have seen nice hand rared babies for €250.

Kind regards

Sarah

Conures make brilliant little companions who if handreared think they are human. If you have one life will never be the same but you will always have someone waiting for you to come home and they be let out to spend time with you.
Lots of brilliant useful information on this site for you to explore

They seems to love cuddles and affection. The other good thing is they do not bond to one person from what I have been reading? We have the choice of the sun, jenday, nanday conures along with a Senegal parrot. Though I´m a bit iffy with a Senegal, though my breeder actually recommended the Senegal.

I love love conures, I prefer nanday conures as I think they are extremely pretty but also love jendays, and sun conures are little bundles of joy. Just remember that many conures are re-homed around puberty, they tend to get nippy, but all birds usually do around this time. Training with any parrot is a must.

Also, conures have a loud ear piercing call. I could never get a sun, jenday, or nanday because I personally cannot stand their natural call.

I wouldn't trust anyone selling conures for that low price! My GCC was £349. Both Jenday and sun conures are very noisy so take that into consideration if you live in a flat or apartment complex

The prices are low due to the economic crisis here. Prices were €350 the breeder has a good reputation too. It is something I am careful of is where I buy from. Also the UK as I remember was always more expensive for parrots.

We will be living in a house with patio and pool, well when it is finished :)

Suns are more expensive due to being more popular for the bright color alone. Quakers can be as friendly as conures, it's not that the bird is a one person species, it's more the gender. If your quaker or conure is male, it can decide one of you is his mate and will be more attached to one person. to counter this, or try to prevent it, you both should give treats and attention equally. Never feed them from your mouth though. I made that mistake once with my roommate's indian ringneck. I still have to watch him a bit when he's interacting with me and reject his advances. See, mates feed one another from the mouth and when your bird tries to feed you, they regurgitate.

Expect a cheaper bird if it is older, expense is mostly due to the novelty of having a chick. Suns, expect $400-$600 for a chick, nandays probably around $400 and under...well, not sure about your area.

They can and will scream for attention and it can take years to train them. Some are just bullheaded and never learn. I live with a screaming sun and have for eight years. My own sun, had him not screaming in a few months, at least not for attention anyway. He was pretty old when I got him though. Older birds are also cheaper because due to lack of experience and lack of proper training or time to do so, they can have all manners of behavioral issues.

Likely best to get a chick.

Hi there, we would never buy an adult bird we will be getting a chick, my fiance has a lot of experience raring chicks (lovebirds, tiels, budgies and a quaker parrot) which is good. The prices here are lower than last year due to the economic crisis that has hit Spain, so a lot of breeders have dropped their prices, especially the gentleman who lives close to us. The prices in the US especially with the $ would be hard to equate to the €. Though normally sun conures in this area go for €450 maximum.

Going to use the clicker training method for our parrot too

:)

Can't wait to see which one you finally decide on :D

I would take price third in how to choose a bird. First, should see how many hours at home you stay. If you want a conure, they are REALLY loud. If you let your conure with a lot of people while its young it would be stranger friendly. Do you like playful and hyper or calm and relaxed ?

I like a cuddly bird, well we both do but constant loudness, I am not so sure. I guess it depends on the bird as every one is different. We will be able to spend every afternoon, evening with our chosen companion after work. We work Monday - Friday.

I like a relaxed bird, who likes to have fun like playing with toys, dancing and most of all affectionate.

I personally can't take the noise from the sun conure. For me the pitch and volume is too high and litteraly hurts my ears. The quaker is noisy at times but the pitch is different and I don't mind a bit. My gcc is not loud at all. But I have a suggestion for you that sounds like everything you want That is my Tiki. She is a female african red bellied parrot. She is very laid back, very cuddely, not afraid of toys. loves to give kisses, and mostly makes whistles and clicking noises , very pleasant to listen to. The only 2 times I have ever heard her sqwauk was when the Quaker tried to grab her by the tail feathers. She is part of the poi group. I much prefer her to the senegals:)

We have decided to buy a green cheeked conure. I know they go through a "nippy" stage but they look so fun and they are not as noisy as their larger cousins :)

I have a yellow sided gcc and her colors are beautiful and yes she can be a little nippy at times but mostly if she doesn't want to come out of her cage at right now otherwise she is really good. My quaker is a character. He was very affectionate till the other parrots moved in. Now he will at times bite if he doesn't get his own way. If he is on top of his cage and I go into the kitchen I will all of a sudden feel this nibble on my sneaker or jeans. Look down and this low gravelly little voice says step up. If that doesn't work he will climb up my jeans , up my shirt then up to my shoulder. And if I don't get him a treat of some sort I will get bitten:eek:. He is a very good people trainer. My gcc loves to sit on my chest in the recliner and have her head and neck scratched. Tiki would spend all day on my lap getting her head and neck scratched:). As I am typing this my quaker just waddled in from the dining room and now is climbing up my pantleg. Gotta go get him a treat while all my skin is still intact:eek::D

My Green-cheeked Conure :green2: is an absolute SWEETHEART... BEST bird I have ever had! He is a Mama's boy but likes other people, too (just not as much! ). We have 3 birds (GCC:green2:, IR :grey: and lovebird :yellow1:) in our household, and I have to say that out of all of them, he has the most engaging, fun personality of the lot! He's my baby, so I *am* kind of partial...

Just from what I have read the crimson belly is a little quieter and a little more laid back than the gcc:)

Cool! :D I´ll put pics up when we get him. It´s going to be March because we´re going to be going to Scotland for 12 days on the 6th and we´re not sure if leaving him with friends is a good idea to feed him with the bonding thing etc.
