Looking Into Getting An Amazon

Hello! I'd love to get an Amazon parrot sometime soon in the future. I already have a flock of parakeets, but I'm in love with Blue Fronted Amazons and similar birds. I've been researching larger parrot care and once I get a job I will be more than able to financially provide for a new bird child. As I'm preparing, I would love to hear your recommendations for cages. I'd only need one for when I'm not home or at night, because I would let my bird out during the day. But I don't know what size to get or how durable I'd need the bars to be. Would this one be suitable? x Or would you recommend a different one? Is it too small? What kind of things do you use outside of the cage for the bird to play/sit on? I want to get some wooden stands and a big climbing net. Would I be able to keep both my parakeets and an Amazon out at the same time if they had separate playing areas? Thank you for the advice, I really want to make sure I do everything perfectly when I get my bird.

I forgot to add- where would you recommend getting one? Any particular breeders? I’ve looked into rescues and there’s a parrot rescue near me but they don’t have Amazons. If I find an amazon for adoption then I’ll probably adopt but I’s Still like have o here breeder recommendations.

I turn the top and sides of all my cages into gyms, with perches toys and food dishes. I also put screws in the ceiling over my breakfast bar, and used fishing line to hang several rope hoops. I also put a shelf on a wall and attached perches to that. As my floor space is limited. Works wonderful for free flighted birds! They hang out at each area at different times of the day. I plan to hang a few more perches from the ceiling in front of my French doors so they can hang out and look out a different window without blocking the doors. They have learned very well not to fly into windows, I spent a lot of time holding them and letting them tap the glass.

Welcome to the huge World of Amazons!

Many Humans fall in Love with Amazons and if they fail to understand what their Amazon is telling them, they can be serious bitten and soon loose the love. Far too many Amazons end up loosing their homes because the Humans fail to follow the basics.

There is no assurance that an Amazon obtained from a breeder is going to assure a positive relationship. Far too many breeders are in a race to place the Amazon prior to properly weening and assuring that the Parrot is on a solid food diet prior to the sale. They convince the buyer that they can 'feed and ween the Parrot' and that it will improve their relationship! Not true!

Good Breeders are getting harder to find and because they fully ween to solid food, their Parrots are more expensive. Why buy a mentally and physically healthy Parrot for more when you can roll the disc and get a cheap one.

Amazons are very smart and are much better at choosing Humans than we are at choosing them. We are into the Amazon being Pretty and not into whether we are a good match.

I would strongly recommend that you read the two Threads at the top of the Amazon Forum (high lighted in light blue) first and then read into the Forum itself.

I strongly recommend allowing an adult Amazon to choose you. Yes, it many take sometime to find one that does, but that should not matter as this is all about a long term relationship, right?

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll look around to find adult birds. But obviously, when if I buy my bird, I'm more than willing to spend quite a bit on it. I don't want to support some cheap breeder only in it for the money. I'm really excited. Thank you!
