Hi, My 19 year old Timneh is due for a new cage due to wear and tear and the powder coating beginning to rust. I'm having problems finding a big enough one that has bar spacing less than 3/4" that is also affordable. Max budget of around $500. He loves to climb but has some deformities of his toes so needs the bars to be closer together or he can lose his grip and the more the bars cross (like a ladder) the better for him. He also like to hang upside down and flap his wings so he needs space for that. He has also learned a lot of tricks in his 19 years and is good at opening doors, unscrewing bolts, etc. Any recommendations? I found some great stainless steel ones but unless I win the lottery those aren't options for us. :)

Welcome, thanks for recognizing the need to replace a cage when rust develops!

While a new cage is preferable, you might source one used at a good price, ie more cage for the money. Local want ads, Craigslist, etc are good options. You'll want to carefully examine and determine if the previous occupant was diseased. In any case, a thorough cleaning is needed before bringing into your home.

If you are fortunate to live in an area with specialized bird stores, they typically have a large selection. Otherwise, online vendors such as Amazon offer a wide variety with a disadvantage of not being able to visually inspect for suitability.

Welcome to Parrot Forums!

We have purchased numerous cages from birdcages4less over the last 30+ years and have always been very happy with their cages. I prefer an organization like birdcages4less as that is the vast majority of their business! That means that everyone knows cages and more importantly what support boxes go with what cage!

We have this cage at the cottage and find that our DYH Amazon likes it.

Cage: Kani Kai Lodge w/ Play Top
Model #: PA5701
Size: 32"W x 22"D x 64"H
On sale price with free shipping $389.95 (5/14/19)

We always get the Toy and Accessory Package (large Bird) $ 49.95 and what is included is worth well more. We always ask as the Package contents change from time to time. (you may want the mid-size Parrot package)
Buy Extra Bowls!!!
Bar spacing: 3/4" (19 mm)

Hint for easier assembly: Assemble the cage with the top down and the bottom up. It is just easier!
If your Parrot was a mechanic in a prior life, consider upgrading the nuts to nylock style nuts purchased from your local Hardware or Big Box Store.

FYI: You can call them and they will be happy to provide other cages that will work for your Parrots needs! And, the staff really know what they are talking about!

Enjoy!
