Hi, so I found this breeder near my house and he has a baby and his price with a nice size cage included was $1200 which I think is good considerin back in nyc the bird alone is $2400. So anyway I have a green cheek and a sun, can anyone tell me some things to check for to make sure it looks healthy. I know nares no discharge, and the obvious.
Id appricate some help as this is my first macaw. Thanks. Erik

Hi Erik,

WHAT type of macaw are you talking about?

Please do not buy an unweaned bird. It takes quite some experience to properly hand feed a macaw, and many things can go wrong. How old is this baby you are looking at?

As for the cage, how big is it?

IF you decide to get the bird, I'd recommend taking him/her to an avian vet as soon as possible. I actually recommend that all new arrivals have a thorough check up.

Where in Florida are you located? That is a very good price especially if the cage is included. I have found them around central Florida for as little as $800.00 for a baby to as much as $1200.00 for a B&G Macaw. Now, I have also been offered baby B&G macaws from around $500.00-$600.00 unweaned from backyard breeders.

I would also add here that make sure that the bird is healthy and weaned thoroughly for that price and also see what kind of warranty you get when buying the bird. I know Florida has laws that govern breeders, but backyard breeders or novice breeders may not have to comply with these laws.

We were looking at a blue and gold and the place was in I believe apopka.
But I have an update: We know a couple who bought two baby ring necks there and they seemed extreamly healthy and lively but two weeks later one died and the other has a respitory infection. Now I'm fully aware there are many things that could of caused this but the vet said the babys should of never been sold so young. So this really turned me off. We live in casselberry can anyone recommend a good breeder close by that has macaws?.
