I personally don't fully see what the problem would be seeing as it would be a third party kind of thing, but I do understand at the same time.
But I do hope it goes through!

The problem with it is PF would have no control over what happens there due to it being a third party. The only way they'd have control is if they modded it but in a site that relies on volunteers only, they might not have the man power to spare for it. Since they'd have no control, of there were harassment or something going on, there'd couldn't be any consequence and it be correctly justified. It's like how schools can't rightfully punish you for stuff that happens off campus.

Oh yeah, that makes sense, but say someone respectful has control over the channel, sees it's getting out of hand and no one does anything about it and it doesn't get better - delete it. At least we tried, right?

I guess but it's still a problem. We can't entirely control who joins and if a young member joins and things go downhill and a parent gets involved it could turn to legal problems for the site owners even though it happened off site. It's just a bunch of potential problems that need to be discussed among the mods and such before it's okay.

Although the mods had a thorough discussion and concluded the chat-room concept is not feasible, the primary reasons are quoted from Owlet. Anything connected to PF would be viewed as an extension and need to be modded. Would be very difficult due to the large volume of exchanges.

A second issue is the admin has previously noted an expensive site upgrade would be necessary to host an in-house chat-room.

Thanks to all who participated, perhaps sometime in the future this will be possible. The internet and technology continues to evolve!
