- Charlie the birdie, yellow naped amazon and little bird, a monk parrot , and Polly -yellow crowned amazon
Two years or so ago I received an Amazon Parrot (he is a rescue bird) and my ten year old daughter fell in love with him, his name is Charlie. He is a bit much for a ten year old to handle although she plays with him quite a lot. She requested a smaller bird to be her very own and I began to look around for a good bird for her. Fate intervened and sent us Little bird. She is a Quaker parrot and as cute as she can be. Little bird had been found on a playground in Dallas, Tx and sent to a couple in a town near where we live. They did not have the first inkling of parrots and soon found themselves outwitted by this flying, shrieking, demon of a bird. They put her up for sale just at Christmas time and $50.00 later we had Little bird. Little bird has no history, no band and she may or may not have been tamed at one point. I was told she was caught at sunset so she may have just refused to fly away or she may be an escaped pet. In any event she is ours now and we love her to pieces. The people who sold her to us had clipped(badly) her wings and filed her beak down(which seems so cruel to me, just the holding her down and the way it must have felt) and tried to take care of her but they couldn't hold her because she bit them and if they got too close to the cage they had her in she went off like a car alarm! Little bird's wings and beak have grown back and she is free flighted in the house and when she is startled she will zoom around through the house until finally she lands on the back of my chair and sits safely behind me. It has been more than a year since we got her and the taming is coming along fairly well. She and Charlie get along well enough to stand on the same cage or playgym (always under supervision) She has no back down in her when Charlie gets annoyed with her but I shoo her off his cage when he is grumpy. My daughter loves Little bird and it seems to be mutual but when Little bird is startled or wants a break from training she flies to ME. Little bird is so SMART! She does not speak but whistles and makes chirpy sounds at Charlie. I am glad they speak bird to each other during the day while I am at work. She is such a darling little thing and we are so lucky to have her. I will post pictures of Little bird soon. Charlie's story is over in the Amazon section along with his picture.
