Ok - so back in December I got a wood platform for the birds. Just to have.
Whisper has buzzed through both of them. I put a new one in his cage on Sunday...I came home last night and part of it was on the floor outside his cage...the stainless steel parts. He obviously loves wood...can I give him 2x4s - untreated of course - to do the same with? I'm not found of giving him $12 platforms to buzz through in four days.

That is a main staple in my home. 2x4s Yes you can . I have them cut and drilled. Put on a chain and tie wrap some to the side
Save you a TON of money they love it
You can even color them with food

I can cut and drill them but will they do that for you at Lowe's or Home Depot?

I'm not sure. BF does it for me. He will mark off ......... drill then cut. You can always call and ask.
I also ask for scrap wood when I go . They will sometimes just give it to me LOL They know what it is for :)

I remember reading that somewhere but I forget things very easily.

Last week I bought a wood perch for him (it's java wood) that has a roll of that shred-able stuff on it. It's a huge roll. I'll put that up this weekend and see how he does with it. I'm sure today he is tearing his cage apart because I didn't give him any new wood for it. He will have to play with his old toys.

Generally not.

I do the same thing. It's WAY cheaper...

Another hot ticket are those dollar store ABC blocks. 12 for one dollar. Drill the center, hang them on sisal rope.

Five bucks gets you three monster sized toys. I have refillable hardwood branches to string the stuff through.

My dollar store doesn't sell the ABC blocks but I will keep looking.
Refillable hardwood branches...I like that idea.
Guess I'm gonna take the truck to Lowe's or Home Depot this weekend.

Now, I have to leave because we are having an ice storm and I was told if I wanted to make it home my midnight I need to leave now.

It's just a foot long, very thick manzanita branch, with about 8 holes drilled through it in a criss cross pattern, that I put sissal rope through, and string toys on...

I've got several of these. Refillable rope and chain toys are the only way to go, in my opinion, because they just don't last if you can't refill them.

Especially with two big macs in the house.

Maggie can destroy a $50 toy in short order... like a day or two if she's into it...

If I were rich it wouldn't matter.

Home Depot does cut lumber, but past a certain number of pieces they begin charging for the service. It may not be so economical if you have the ability to do it at home and need lots of pieces cut. I've had them cut lumber 2X for me since I do not have a saw. The first was for a ottoman I built and that had about 10 pieces, and they charged for each piece past 3 I think (?) but the platforms I made to go under Kiwi's cage they cut for free (just 2 pieces). You have to go to the way back of the lumber department for it.

give him a phone book to tide him over, mine LOVE to destroy phone books. jake shredded half of one just today, there's a pile of scrapes about 6" thick in the bottom of her cage.

He doesn't seem to like paper. (My Severe loves to tear up books.) I was so excited that he liked these platforms but ummm going through them in four days is a bit drastic. He may not like 2x4s either but I'm going to try. I did go to Michaels and get more wood to make him more platforms though.

If Lowe's will cut the 2x4s two or three times I can then at least fit them in my car and don't have to take the truck.

Hey - does that really work? I have lots of bills (years) that I need shredded and I was seriously wondering about it.

Yeah. My birds get my junk mail.

One of Tusk and Lila's favorite things is to shred a soda can 12 pack box stuffed with junk mail.

Best bird toys in the world are the free ones that they play with for two hours or so at a time...

Keeps them busy. Doesn't break the bank.

Win. Win.

Then you sweep a lot. (You can't have everything.)

Yippee. I must have three boxes or more of stuff that needs to be shredded. Field day for all of us.
