Today we went to the store where we got Venus and I spoke with the owner of the store and he gave me some info on Venus. First, she is between 1-2 years old and is a rehome. The previous owner's job was taking up too much time and she came back to the store where she got Venus and he took Venus back to rehome her.

I was taken back a bit when the guy started hinting around to breeding Venus and I told him no I didn't want to breed. He told me I could make a lot of money breeding. I told him money was great but I would have a hard time and issues with making sure the babies found loving, responsible homes. The vibe I got was he wanted Venus back because he said female ekkies are hard to find and he focused on breeding, breeding, breeding. I could be wrong but it was like he set my alarms off. Well Venus is going nowhere but now I have a better understanding of her background and handling. I have no desire to breed and/or sell birds.

 I don't think I like that store owner! THAT is the kind of "breeder" who does more harm than good. Does he realize how much money needs to go INTO breeding and raising chicks properly?! Not just profit! That sounds like the type of breeder who will sell unweaned, don't know what subspecies they're breeding, oblivious to disease control, etc. and doesn't care to learn either, as long as he's making as much money as possible.

Then he knows you don't have breeding experience, yet is trying to encourage you to breed Eclectus? It's not right for him to encourage any pet owner to take on breeding exotic animals like parrots, and even more so with ones like Eclectus who require even more expert knowledge. What a scumbag! :(
But good for you for telling him Tracey. Venus is lucky to have the home she has!

THANK YOU!!!!!! Husband has been telling me I'm taking it too far and over thinking it. When we got Venus the owner wasn't there. I know his business is pets, pet supplies, etc but I don't agree with having babies to make money. Quality of life is important no matter the being.

Yeah...that's sad. There's two kinds of breeders, greedy inconsiderate dumb ( Chinese word) airheads, whom could care less about any bird and looking at any bird they see dollar signs, not love and compassion for the bird.

Then there is breeders that breed sparingly for the love of the bird and species and truly care about the parents and offspring of the birds.
Those are the ones you do business with.

What's sad is a bird can't always choose it's breeder, nor can a bird always chose it's destiny or home, many birds do not have a great life being a breeding machine and nothing more. That's no life for a bird. They're run like a puppy mill. Truth be told, they all need good homes.....

My Ekkies came from the same breeder who considered her offspring a labor of LOVE! And it showed.... healthy chicks that became healthy adults with NO behavioral issues!

I would love to be the "model buyer" for Venus but I think it's a happy, and predestined occurrence. I got her out of an undesirable circumstance without my knowing. I hate the thought of a birdy mill, she will never be one in my presence. I am still disgusted by his suggestion of "making lots of money". Husband turned red in his cheeks. Yes I'm outspoken with fur and feather babies. I felt bad at first about purchasing her, but now I'm so glad I took her out of the traffic. She's HOME, SAFE, LOVED!!!! She is very loved, she is so sweet. I think it hurt more to find out on Saturday that she was a rehome, how sad. No one should bring a parrot baby home that's not thinking they are a lifelong family member.

WARNING! WARNING!WARNING! Evil money monger alert! Eckies are one of the hardest species to hand raise, and I believe they are fairly difficult to breed, and NO ONE should breed their pets just because they could make some bucks. Does he even have any idea of. The special diet eckies need esp when breeding? Does he know that they often kill their mates because in the wild they area it monogamous? Where does he get off hinting he wants a bird back that he has already sold TWICE? Eew! And yeah, wanna talk about breeding being expensive? I have put thousands of dollars into Sam and Lady, guess how much "profit" they have given me? NONE. And they are not so complicated as eckies!

I love my birds and even my "breeders" are pets to me and I do it for the love of the bird, the love of the person looking for a bird, and in hopes of what I can learn and help others understand so that birds may be better understood and better cared for, live in their homes longer, etc. the kind of person you are talking about doesn't deserve to own pets and certainly should never be allowed near Venus again!
