Hi everyone,

I had to purchase Nico a new travel carrier/cage. Pictures will be below. Soft sided ones Nico learned to unzip, or he destroys them. I bought a cheap cockatiel cage for travel Nico also learned to get out of that one, and the bars were easily bent. Now Iā€™ve purchased this plexiglass, stainless steel one thatā€™s in the pictures below. I canā€™t find anything out there for larger parrots.

Does anyone have any ideas for a larger travel carrier/cage? Iā€™m out of ideas.

Thank you for the help. Iā€™ve only had a large parrot for 3 years. Iā€™m still learning, and I keep running into these problems.

Right now I keep a Teil as y largest but used to keep a Pionus in here until I had to rehome her. She seemed pretty well in it. The longest time I had her in it was 1 1/2 weeks.

Thank you, Iā€™ve been a little worried as I know that a travel cage/carrier isnā€™t ideal to sleep in for long periods.

I have to take Nico with me everywhere. If I left him locked up for days on end at home in his cage, and with no interaction heā€™ll be featherless. Nicoā€™s cage at home is large but itā€™s not exactly something I can travel with. Iā€™m stuck between a rock & hard place. If heā€™s in a travel carrier at least I can get him out, and interact with him throughout the day.

Yes, I have people who would watch Nico. As in theyā€™ll feed him, and change his water while Iā€™m gone. They are timid, and wonā€™t take him out which I can understand. However that doesnā€™t work for Nico, and he wants out of his cage all day everyday. I do let him out for hours on end. He doesnā€™t do well locked up for whatever reason.

It makes me feel a lot better that other birds have done okay in travel carriers. Thank you so much.

Feel free to ask any more questions, it was great helping you(y)

I have seen people with bigger birds use cat/dog carriers. Put a branch across the middle, hang some food dishes.

Thatā€™s a really neat idea. If this plexiglass one doesnā€™t work out I may do that. The kennel seems spacious.

May I suggest training Nico to wear a harness instead of being in a travel cage?
Travel cages are meant for just that, traveling, as the size for them is WAY WAY too small to keep a parrot in for a protracted length of time. I have one of the all metal ones suggested above and the longest I've has Salty in it is about 3 hours, driving to a friends place for a play date.

I agree, I just donā€™t know what else to do. Nico is intelligent enough to where he can break out of flimsy things. I essentially need a pop up large cage that doesnā€™t exist, or I need to try to build a stand that can break down to fit into cars.

I have this travel cage for my girl. I strap it on a pet stroller in order to taker her out. Would this type of cage work for Nico? I got it from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VR27ZGN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
We are headed to a pet store to look for one of these cages now. The plexiglass one wonā€™t be working out. Nico has stopped eating & Iā€™ve had to hand feed him. It appears like he has some balancing issues right now too. That was just from a 5 hour car ride. Iā€™ve taken him on 24 hour car rides without any issues. Iā€™m assuming the plexiglass one is just way way too small for him.

Oh my gosh! Thatā€™s awful. Iā€™m so sorry! Iā€™m sure you are really worried. Do you think itā€™s car sickness? If you donā€™t find a carrier like the one I posted maybe you can use a dog crate? It will have more ventilation and be bigger than the plexiglass one.

We got one of these. Iā€™m wondering if Nico isnā€™t doing well because he isnā€™t used to looking through plexiglass? No idea.
