Hello! My name is Savannah, and I am quite new to this forum other than using it for research prior to me getting Kona, but this is my first formal introduction!!! I had researched macaws and birds for months and finally purchased Kona, a 13 year old B&G from a lady rehoming her birds out in Dallas Texas. Now I have to be honest here, Kona is the sweetest macaw I have ever met in my entire life. I have only known him for around 4 days now and he talks, lets me help with pin feathers, and it sounds ridiculous, but after the vet mangled him with a towel during his check up he even let her pet him! He is honestly so well socialized with strangers and loves his fruits and veggies in his parrot chop. I was aware that I should leave him alone for a few days and not interact with him, but through the cage bars he was letting me pet him on day 2 so I decided to let him out onto his manzanita tree stand and he is just darling. Okay enough about Kona (I'm sorry but hes just so sweet!!). I wanted to know if you had any advice for a new macaw owner? I did a lot of research, but there are always those things that just get passed around by word of mouth so I wanted to see if any of you guys had some tips! By the way, his vet check up went well and he is a perfectly healthy little guy!

Hello and welcome to you and Kona! He sounds like a real sweetheart:) I will let the macaw experts chime in with advice, but just wanted to tell you how happy I am that you joined us! I'd love to see a picture of Kona and of your lovie:)

Hi Savannah, welcome to the forums! Kona sounds wonderful, thank you for adopting him. I'm looking forward to hearing more about Kona and your like lovebird.

Welcome and be welcomed. At this point, Kona is the expert on Kona, and you should proceed at the pace set by Kona. Sounds like he is settling in fine - some birds take awhile, some are right out of the box like old friends. He sounds like the latter type. How lucky you are!

Welcome Savannah and Kona!! So glad your research led you to an extremely well socialized companion. The Macaw Forum has many specialized threads specific to the species - the big beak in particular.
