Knowledgeable Members of Toucans ?

I'm not sure about prices, you might want to check out softbillsforsale.com for an idea on pricing, although most of the ads there are for adult birds. I think aracari and toucanet babies can be around $1500 - 3000. Breeders and prices are unusually tricky to find!

One of my favorites is the beautiful Emerald Toucanet:

They are awesome birds. I recommend a toucanette.

I have an extensive list of good foods and bad foods if you are interested. I can email it to you. Surprisingly enough, there are several fruits that are NOT good for them.

Their diet is very specific. Be prepared to be dicing fruits and veggies for their daily meals. :)

Jason Crean is an awesome breeder. Fabulous. :)

I agree, this Collared Aracari is beautiful !
Any idea on cost ?

At Bird Crazy in Clairmont Mesa (San Diego, Ca) we saw them for around the $2000 range, but boy are they beautiful in person!

The cost is prohibited for us, just like the grand of all birds (for us anyway) is the amazing,....HYACINTH. But, maybe someday.

I have never thought to own a toucan, but I enjoy looking at them! This guy is a permanent resident of Todd Marcus in Jersey-- which I gotta say, I prefer over Bird Paradise.

Look at the shiny curly feathers on his head! I have no idea what species he is. He's very small.

For some reason, I don't care for the colors, maybe too many or just not the right hue's ? I definitely don't like any brown's. I'm a "flashy dude" ! lol

Too bad Todd does not have the bird inventory price's on the site. Guess we need to call.

We just don't want to spend over $1,500 for a fricken BIRD, lol  :D

I can't beleive a HYACINTH is like,...8k-10k &,.... more ! :11:

Hi ***, don't know if you want to keep your name off the board.

Anyway, good to hear from you. The products we bought from you are fantastic, for Shelby and Patty & I.

I wouldn't mind chopping fresh food on a daily basis.

Who is Jason Crean ?

I just came across an a 3 year old male toco toucan 7,000.00. Wow !

Of course, I like the most expensive !!! ;)
So, don't think we'll ever get a Toco.

Thanks,
Kev

I haven't had the chance to visit Todd Marcus yet , but I plan on it soon , lolol.
If you don't mind me asking , what do you like better at Todd Marcus then
Bird Paradise ?

It's sort of like night and day in there. I have heard many times that the people who run BP are really wonderful and care for their animals above profit. I agree that they are always professional and seem to be good people. But I often feel like the birds they have in stock are somewhat under cared for-- so I mean the adult/juvenile ready-to-sell population. Last time I was there the cockatoo population was looking better but all the times before that I was kind of taken aback by the look of them-- they were filthy & covered in poo, wandering around on the floor... kind of strange. At Todd Marcus the birds are generally in perfect feather and they have fewer at any given time, but stil a wide range of species. and I found the staff to be very solicitous. At BP you're kind of left to your own devices, which I don't mind sometimes, but I also love how at TM they really want to talk to you if you're wanting to look at birds. And as a bonus, I think they're actually a little cheaper as far as supplies & food! It's cleaner too :)

Thank you :). I was pretty much left to my own devices , which I found sort of unpleasant because if I were there to purchase that day , I would have wanted a knowledgable employee with me. If I had wanted to ask to hold a bird , there was no one there to ask !
But , it didn't matter , there was a Bare Eye that found a way to climb up my leg to my shoulder , lolol. I was nervous with him there , but soon found out he was a absolute love bug , lol. I really wanted to take that baby home with me that day :(
It was pretty hard to walk away , but my Yoshi boy was only with us a couple of months and I felt it wouldn't be fair to him to bring home another baby so soon.
Gotta love my Yoshi Boy :)

I can't wait to visit Todd Marcus !!!! It's such a exciting ride , lol. You never know wht could happen on that road trip :)
My husband is wanting a Citron in the worst way , or a LSC . Idk...

Back to BP , I liked the way they suggested you disinfect your hands before entering each bird room , but whether they are watching everybody , who knows ?

I still think of that Bare Eye though :(. I hated leaving him....

Hello everyone! If you are interested in an Aracari or any sort of Toucan or Toucanet, I would HIGHLY recommend Jerry Jennings, he is a breeder in southern California and he is an amazing guy. He helped me through every single question about which bird was right for me, and even rarer he talked me out of a 10,000$ bird! For a beginner he gives the best recommendations, and I will be taking home a lil' baby Collared Toucan soon!

This is his website; Toucans EmeraldForestBirds.com

I know several toucan breeders... and several people who have kept toucans.

First of all, these are diet sensitive birds, they are EXTREMELY susceptible to a thing called iron storage disease, so feeding them wrong will kill them in very short order... like don't even bother to get one, because the minute you get attached to it, it's dead, cuz you didn't do your job!

They are liquid poopers - much like lories, so these are definitely large outdoor aviary birds... They are extremely active, and wouldn't do well in even a small flight cage.

With the right set up, and the right diet, they can be great...

90% of us can't give them that, which makes it a very, very bad idea for most folks!

i heard they can be very good pets if trained and cared for properly.
Tey also "purr" when content :)
we considered a toucan when we were looking at the hyacinth.

you totally made the right call. They hy-hy is way more interactive... Goofier, and will live longer.
