Today it's only in the upper 80's, tomorrow 90's, and tuesday supposed to be in the low 100's! I'm making some ice treats for them, but until then all I can do is mist Kenji(which helps massively). Only thing is he hates it! I already knew this, but when he starts holding his wings out and his beak is slightly open(but his tongue isn't moving in a panting way) I need to cool him off, I'm not going to wait until he is full on panting to cool him off! I keep refreshing his bathing bowl but he isn't using it, and I also put some ice cubes in his water.

Here he is with his wings out, and his beak slightly open

Climbing out of his cage after I misted him, because he has less feather dust(all that misting) his lilac iridescence is super intense

Luckily Rosie isn't showing any heat stress. I'm misting her as well though as she acts a little more energized after.

the beaded water photo is so cool! His color is gorgeous. He does look hot in that first photo, with his wings out like that. What is your indoor temp? I keep my house about 80 most of the time in summer, and all the animals seem fine (I drop the temp upstairs at bed time, but that's just me and the dogs up there).

I hate California summers. This Saturday it was 90F in Long Beach. I haven't decided whether to hook up my portable AC yet so I'm in the same shoes as you, Copper.

What I do, since I have to leave for work, is leave frozen bottles of water on top of and inside Boomer's cage. I got those big plastic bottles so the ice lasts longer. Make sure you don't fill it completely with water so it doesn't warp the bottle since ice expands :)

Fans can only do so much for birds I think. Problem is they don't sweat so even if you blow a fan around them, it doesn't cool them like it does us sweaty humans. I still leave 2 fans circulating in the room just to keep the air moving. I also leave the windows open.

How hot did it get at your house last summer?

Poor kenji . Our house even though we have air conditioning is 75-80 degrees . We turn it off and on to our comfort but I always worry about the changes we make might affect the fids , but their fine . I have a whole tray of frozen fruit and fruit juice cubes so im set :D . The fids don't mind the heat , they just frolic in their small little purple bathtub and look at the small mirror at the bottom lol . At least they're hygienic

He's not using his bathing dish because he's got his slave running around keeping him comfortable ! ! !

I'm going to see how Kenji does Monday and maybe Tuesday, if he is still acting too hot I'm going to have my brother help me move him(and might as well move Rosie too) down stairs where it's 10 degrees cooler. I don't really like having them down stairs since we have a few Teflon pans, and my family all think I'm over dramatic when I talk about how careful we need to be as we cook. I don't trust people not to be stupid. If I move them down stairs I'll steal those pans and hide them when they are down there.

Only bad thing about this is both the cages weigh 98+ pounds, and it's very hard getting them up and down the stairs. But Kenji is obviously not used to the heat like Rosie.

We don't have AC, so we open the windows at night when it cools off, then close them back up in the morning around 8 when it is hotter outside than inside the house. we changed to double paned windows a few years ago that help so much.

As long as the nights are cool the house stays relatively cool until around 4:00 in the afternoon. My room was in the 80's by the end of the day, at the moment it is in the 70's since the sun is going down and we just opened all the windows.

Good idea! I'll try the large water bottles.

I mist both of them every once in a while to make up for their lack of sweat, but it only does so much. We can't leave windows open during the day, it's always cooler inside during the day and one open window only lets in hot air.

Last summer wasn't bad at all and the house stayed in the 70's to 80 degrees. The year before I got Rosie we had a terrible heat wave where it only cooled by a few degrees at night, during that time it was in the upper 90's upstairs, and in the 80's down stairs. This heat wave is supposed to cool to the 60's-70's at night so it shouldn't be that intense this week.

I worry about those changes to, although I'm thinking that maybe I should buy a portable AC sometime in case of emergencies. A actual AC seems like such a waste of money, we use the heater every summer but AC isn't really common in residential houses here and the weather is usually not that terrible.

hahaha, He sure doesn't act like it! The second he see's me pull the mister out he climbs into his cage, fluffs up angry, and says "No! No screaming"

We've had a heat wave here too. It was 40 (104) here where I live. Poor birds were standing with their wings away from their bodies to cool down. Showers helped, but they dried so fast... Good thing It'll be down to 90 this week. Nice and cool for valley summers ;)

I simply can not fathom not having an air conditioner. 73 F all year round or I get snappy. :p

Yay! So it cooled back down, today is only supposed to be 88! And then the rest of the week be in the 80's and upper 70's. So happy it was short lived :D

LOL I can totally understand people in the desert having air conditioner ;) it really isn't all that common here though.

Ha, my husband can't stand air conditioners; something about dry bad air and too much noise. When summer hits, I just get really good about opening and closing windows, blinds, and doors as the sun moves so that the house stays close to bearable.

I feel the same way about heaters(except we actually use that, cause we don't want the house to be 30-40 degrees at night LOL). It makes the air dry, and I also find them a little creepy. Like, if during the summer bugs climb into those vents then die, or die as the heat turns on, and they turn into dust and that bug dust is getting blown into my room D: We change the filters, but is it even possible to clean the vents themselves? I know there has to be a at least a couple bugs, or maybe at some point a fly got lost in those vents.

I live in Kentucky and I have never been in a house that did not have air conditioning and heat. What are you Californians up to??
