We went to the bird store today and I fell totally in love with a Kakariki! She was so sweet and cuddly! Im really considering putting a deposit on her but have questions, ive read they are very hyperactive and dont love to be pet, but shes the opposite! Shes a little active but pretty calm too and loved to be pet. Why is that? Is she just different? They said shes a little young, still cant fly completely. Im really confused because I read they dont like being handled, but she adored it!

Any of you have Kakarikis? Could anyone tell me more about them? Because I really love the one I saw!

-also they hate being wing clipped? I really feel like I need to clip her though.

Also do they have different temperaments when you get them home or is what I saw of her/him what she would be like when I got her?

I had to google Kakariki, they are very cute, i have never heard of them, where are you from?

What she acts like now likely will not be how she acts six months to a year from now. If the description say they are hyper and need to fly regularly then that is what you should believe. Additionally I read that they typically should be kept in an aviary, not your typical cage.

here is a few points from my 'species guide' :p
kakarikis have wonderful personalities and are very intelligent, extremely active and also possess short attention spans and are constantly on the move..
they are not noisy or destructive, they tend to become nibblers or territorial.. If you are going to wing clip, clip the wings before they first take flight.. females tend to like physical contact more than the males.. they generally dislike being cuddled but love to be sitting on you..
they are active and normally kept as an aviary bird because the need a large flight cage.. provide plenty of toys because they love playing..

good luck! :)

Mind if I ask what your "special guide" is? :)

its called: good parrotkeeping
then theres a chapter called the species... and has a few pages (per species) on characteristics, behaviour, diet, cage and toys on mainly every parrot species

Thanks for the info. Looking into it now. ;)

I've never owned one as a pet, but I've seen them... both in the USA as well as in NZ. The ones in NZ were in aviaries, and one of them was even trained for a show! I tried taking a video of the one in the show but messed up... got some in one of the aviaries, though!

Some birds are described as "aviary birds" simply because they don't enjoy cuddles and scratches and they aren't very "hands on" kind of birds... they are more the type to enjoy exploring or sitting on you or on your shoulder. That doesn't mean they're not great companions!

Personally, I don't like the idea of clipping birds, especially birds considered "aviary" birds that use their wings more than their feet to get around (i.e. grass parakeets - I've never seen a bourke parakeet or a turquoisine climb the cage bars! Wings all the way!), although each their own.

MollyGreenCheek's is correct, that behavior may change, but you never know! You might end up with an exceptionally friendly bird!

Curious to know what my Encyclopedia of Parakeets says on kaks, now!

The owner of the store has owned about 10-30 of them (forgot how many) and said hers had stayed like they were and dont get depressed being clipped. She also said Kakarikis are very nice, cuddly birds. Weird. And you might think she would be just telling me that for me to buy her, but guys, the owner of this store is bird crazy. She LOVES her birds. Its a really nice place in there and she takes great care of all of her many macaws, conures and other birds, I really doubt she'd do that.

We are making a deposit on her tomorrow! So excited! Sweetest bird ever! (well, IMO XD) :D

I've never met one, but I seem to remember somebody posting about them being rather predatory with smaller birds and needing to eat meat.

Encyclopedia of Parakeets
Diet: In addition to the usual seeds, wheat and oats are eaten. A favorite is germinated food which the birds like to search for on the ground.

Doesn't mention anything about them as pets, only about keeping, breeding, diet, habits, habitat, range and characteristics.

Happycat, pre-gratz on this little beauty! Can't wait until you have her home and we can learn more about her!

I just vistited him today! At first when they brought him out of his cage, he acted like they say in descriptions, he didnt like being held and he was all over the place. After a couple of minutes of getting him off my head when he flapped up there he calmed down a bunch and acted like he did the first time. He looks kind of different too! Still adorable though! I am SO excited, its so hard waiting! He is so sweet! he just sits on my shoulder and cuddles with us. I walk around the bird store as he makes his cute little squeak.

How do you guys wait for your birds before you get them?? This is so hard! XD

Also, name ideas anyone? I think hes a boy. some name ideas are Toby, Dipper, Skipper and Piper, but my sister and mom and me all want a name we all like but cant agree on one. My mom likes Toby but my sister doesnt, my sister likes skipper and piper but my mom dosent. I like Dipper but my mom dosent. Then if they find one I dont like it XD Any more names you guys can think of for a (most likely, Ill take girl name ideas too) boy kakariki?

(also, he has yellow eyes now, I guess their eye colors change when they grow older, like kittens I guess?)

I've never had to wait for a young bird before, so I don't know what that kind of wait is like!
