Kakariki eggs due to hatch

So one of my Kakariki pairs has been on eggs for 21-23 days and there's still no chirping. Should I leave them or go in and check the eggs?

My husband Loki thinks there's absolutely no point in checking the eggs..

They may all be infertile....did you candle them at all?

One way to check now is to hold an egg - you'll be able to tell if they are infertile as they'll bey very light in weight (better to put a light underneath them and you'll see).

Hey sorry! Yeah, Haru (miss Mummy) ate about 8 of the eggs cos they were infertile, crushed and ate the brain of one of the chicks (it was deformed) and killed the other chick (it was extremely under-developed). So that was disappointing She hasn't gone back down to lay yet.

You gotta do something about the egg eating!!!! I would highly suggest you in removing one of the eggs next time and poke holes on both end to empty the content into a dish then mix hot mustard with chili powder and tabasco sauce, mix all ingredients and then use a syringe to put all the contents back inside the egg, then seal both end of the egg with some corn starch then give it back to her. It'll deter her from eating them ever again!

Don't forget, the mommy usually wont start incubating the eggs until the last one is hatched, so always add an extra 5-7 days to the incubation period!

(And sorry about your babies, is she a first time mom? usually happens the first 1 or 2 clutches unless your lucky, atleast some were fertile, that means your pair will do it eventually)

Ah yes, thank you for that!

Yes that was her very first time. It's just different because I had a Green Cheek Conure pair produce,on their very first try, 4 healthy babies who we started raising at 2 weeks. Would've been later but the youngest two weren't getting fed enough, especially the youngest. So yes, just a bit different when you have one pair of birds do AMAZINGLY on their first time round.

Not necessarily true! They can start incubating the moment the first one is laid. In order to have them hatch at the same period you have to yank the egg the day it's laid and keep it cool but keep turning it while she's sitting on the dummy egg, do the same with the next egg, then replace them all back in once the clutch is finished.

That's interesting. How cool do you keep them? room temp? refrigerator? I've never used dummy eggs before.

I know with our Japanese Quail eggs we kept them away in a secure plastic container (paper towel on the bottom - the lid off) in a cupboard drawer. And then when we wanted to, we put them in the egg incubator and they all hatched.. that was 19 of them @.@ that room got smelly fast! lol
