Kai was bird number 3 when I got her... just felt like sharing the story and some photos :)
I was on craigslist back in 2009 just browsing through bird posts and other random things when I saw an ad for a cockatiel for $25. There were no photos and I just thought that was really cheap and someone would probably buy this bird not realising the responsibility that comes with it.
I decided to go check her out and I was horrified when I got to these peoples home. This little bird was TERRIFIED of people, and the cage was so small... I wouldn't have considered it an appropriate size for ANY species of bird. There was one very skinny perch and no toys. The food and water were set up directly under the perch so there was poop in her water and food and I assume the cage(if you can even call it that) had never been cleaned because there was mold under the food dishes. I didn't even think about it and I just wound up giving the people $30 and leaving with her.
The people said they had gotten her at a petcetera and didn't know how old she was.. I think she was around 1 or 2 when I got her. Now she is 5 or 6.
I named her Kai and I remember being so excited to go to the store and get her a new cage and new toys and good quality food.
I nearly cried when she played with her new toys lol.
She was still super scared of people and hands and so I began training her for the next few months. I used spray millet as a treat to coax her into letting me handle her without her getting scared. She is now happy and healthy and one of my cuddly birds :)
She was quarantined and went to the vet before being with the others.

The picture of Kai with millet is on her first day at home. notice how scruffy she is? Out of all my tiels she is OBSESSED with having showers with me. I think because she never once got misted with her old owners.

The others are from more recently :D

Thank you for sharing her beautiful success story and bless you for giving this darling girl a quality life. I bet she loves being with you and your other birds. Small cages are a personal pet peeve of mine, so many birds spend their lives in cages unfit for a cricket.

Love the pics of Kai and your signature looks great.

Thank you for sharing Kai's story. What a lucky little bird. I kept saying aww, as my heart broke when I read the beginning, but then it was 'aww' in a good way in the end. Kai looks like a real sweetheart! Beautiful solid gray too.

I'm sure this post could be helpful for a couple members on here who have recently gotten or are thinking about getting an untamed adult

Kai is so beautiful now, looks like a totally different girl than when you first got her. Bless you for finding her and giving her such a wonderful home:)

My first cockatiel was a similar situation except from a pet store (some 35 years ago!). I was 15 and my parents must've been crazy for letting me get this bird! After months of gentle work, Riki became a sweet bird. Miss that crazy bird so much! He had a great life...

Wish people would consider what they were doing before getting any pet.

How lucky to have found Kai, and for her to have found you:D She is a very beautiful tiel. I'm not familiar with all the different mutations, but love how she is all gray and white!

me too! Before her I had never seen an all grey cockatiel except on the internet.:D

That's what I like about Cockatiels-they are so willing to let go of the past if given half a chance.
