Parrots
22 week old B&G Macaw
Hi All

I'm a new feather mummy to a beautiful blue & gold 5 mth old Macaw and would like some advice on teaching her how to play with us.

She's out the cage everyday and apart from looking in a mirror and a clumsy fly into the walls, tv, windows all she wants to do is sit on my chest, slightly spread her wings and hold my little finger in her beak.

She has toys in her cage (don't like using that word) and plays with them but has no interest in any when she's out.
I've got different toys i rotate so she dosn't get fed up with same ones and in her home she'll play but just either hugs as above or lays on her back.

It's something amazing about being hugged by a parrot but i don't want her to see me as boring.

As soon as we sit on the floor or anywhere she'll stand down but then just climb straight back up to my shoulder. If i show her toys while she's sat the she gives a little growl and put her head on my neck.

I'm worried she'll become bored, what advice can anyone offer please?

The first three Threads of the MAC Forum contain a great background for any MAC owner. I would recommended reading them in reverse order, starting with the third one. Also, in the MAC Forum, read any Thread or Post written by BirdMan666. This will get you a solid base. Also, re-read those Threads and Posts from time to time as a refresher.

MAC babies as with most babies are true joys being with and around. This is a very important time in your babies life and being a good parent is even more important then being a good friend! That involves setting boundaries into place and teaching them to play and be around People, but just as importantly self-entertaining with toys. Provided lots of toys for your B&G to take from big pieces to tiny pieces. Start with soft woods like finish grade pine (if you can dent it with your finger nail is soft enough) and as he becomes comfortable with that switch to construction grade, white /yellow pine (non-treated) 38 mm x 75 mm like sizes.

In addition to Socializing them with other People. Playing games like Pass the Birdie are great tools for learning. Boring is something that People do to themselves, baby Parrots are never bored, they are always into something!
