Folks, this is not a political post, I honestly don't care what side of the ales you are on.

This is a post about what we are losing. At the beginning of the last century there were nine species of lions and tigers. We are now down to three. Only a few thousand tigers roam the earth.

An elephant is poached every twenty minutes. Can we afford to allow that wise and noble animal to be hunted as well?

Both Cecil and one of his sons lost their life to a "trophy hunter".

Define Trophy Hunter. A rich, immoral jack bum who pays 50, 000 and up, to hang an endangered animal's head on their wall in order to puff up their fragile ego. In other words, they are a bottom feeder.

Wolves almost became extinct last century, but thanks to the persevering efforts of a few, their numbers are now thieving.

Most animals are not that lucky. It has gotten so bad that India has discovered the gene to clone the tiger.

And yes, Cockatoos and other birds have made the endangered list as well. During the 19th century many exotic birds of Hawaii became extinct because their feathers were used to decorate ladies hats.

And if we are not careful, and start giving a damn, other animals will follow their fate.

Snake people feel free to chime in, because I can remember a time when that reptile was used to make purses, wallets, and other fashion statements.

Now what are you going to do?

A worthy topic for the O/T Forum provided we all strive for rational discussion of our points of view. I respectfully ask for conversation limited to first-hand prose rather than posting links to specific organizations or memes. Social media is filled with the latter two ad nauseum!

Now what are you going to do?

(((Moderator hat off)))

I despise trophy/sport hunting and support various advocacy groups to eradicate the former and help minimize the latter. Unfortunately, recreational hunting is woven through the fabric of most societies and proponents are not about to cease. Educating youngsters will help to bend the curve downward over time. Many governments have chosen to clamp down on the use of ivory for ornamental use and animal parts as "medicinal."

A small solution-piece of the big problem...
In South America, preservation of wild Rickeybirds has several champions.
Every little bit counts.

As a point of interest, China recently banned the sale and trafficing of all ivory, all, including the so called "mammoth tusks" sold out of Russia. China was the biggest importer of ivory in the world, as the Chinese love the glowing attribute of ivory jewelry and statues etc. THe inclusion of mammoth ivor closes the door on retail fakers who would gladly use modern havested ivory sold to them as mammoth. Good post.

I know some countries regulate the hunting of species to pay for conservation of said species. It can be controlled and it can be good for the species if the funds are used properly. I'm not advocating, I just wanted to add to the conversation useful information.

Only if the numbers are in the healthy range. Elephants, lions, tigers, etc. are nowhere near healthy numbers.

It could if each administration is on the same page. And we must convince the average person in Africa that tourism is the best way out of poverty.

Thank you.

China is finally moving in the right direction, unfortunately we aren't.

I do not believe in hunting for game, sport or 'trophy'... but there is hunting for survival and if you honor the life taken by sustaining your own or family, I believe in that type of 'hunting'.

We have a family friend who is an avid hunter, but they also have a small farm in Texas where they have countless rescue animals including goats, horses and even a setup for feral cats for safety and protection (catch / neuter / release program). But he would never kill an animal for sake of pride or ego, every animal he has taken has been for food or in a few cases in one location they lived, a few wild boars were shot to protect the 'domestic' animals and one that literally charged Scott head on when Scott was out fixing fences.

My belief, if you take the life you honor it, and hanging the head on the wall is not honor, that's just ego...

Very well stated. And most responsible hunters also know to never hunt an animal that has declining numbers and is on the endangered list.

I fear for the elephants. The greed of humans is too great. They won't stop at elephants. I saw a photo this week of hornbill skulls - turns out the horn is an acceptable substitute for ivory. Unless by some miracle humans decide that they don't want parts of animals as trophies...or as decoration for their homes. Pessimistic I am.

Pessimistic? I know I am. Of course they won't stop. MAN will continue to kill until he finally kick the one animal off the cliff who will directly impact his survival.

People will never stop seing animals as a resource. It deeply saddens me, always has. Every life is sacred and should be left for nature to decide, not us x

Well, we have been running the show for only 35,000 years. Maybe someday another species will replace us. A smarter one. I can live with that.

I am hoping this post is allowed to stay up, because this is a story that needs to be told.....

.....Now what are you going to do?

This thread has meandered from a noble effort to raise consciousness and spur action to your pining for the end of mankind.

What are you doing to ameliorate the situation?

we are losing much. Not sure how many are aware but the last male northern white rhino officially passed away just this week leaving only his daughter and granddaughter as the last of the species. Due 100% to poachers looking to line their pockets. Heck if I had a gun and enough ammo I'd be out there putting a stop to all this poaching myself

I think "pinning" is not the right word. I think what I was trying to get across is that if we don't stop throwing animals over the cliff, we too, will become extinct. And that's just a fact.

I am writing to state representatives and trying to get a petition going.

This is all about politics and hardly nothing to do with conservation.

I am also participating in my zoo's program regarding tigers and how we need to keep this species going.

And we lost the black rhino last decade. My heart is breaking.
