Hi Guys! I just got two blue fronted amazons :green::green:both between 6 and 10 years old. They talk and sing, whistle and make outstanding sound effects. I was looking into breeding them. Although I bought them from the same person, they were not sure the sex of the two birds. I kept them in separate cages but right next to each other for the first few days and then since they seemed to be extremely interested in each other, I put them together. They have been together for 2 days now with no issues. One of them is significantly larger than the other one which leads me to believe that I have a male and a female. My boyfriend and I both breed canaries and cockatiels but have never done anything this size. We do have an aviary big enough for them to have space. If they were two males or two females, would they get along the way they do now? What about the size difference? Also could you give me some information about breeding them? Thanks so much guys! Email me at: [email protected] :green:

Yes, two males or two females could bond with each other just fine. I have a Yellow Fronted old female which loves a Blue Fronted female and a Yellow Nape male that is bonded and gets preened all the time by a Blue Fronted male (and he has a mate!) and this same Blue Fronted male is best friends with still another Yellow Nape male. And their sizes vary, just like people. Why don't you just have them DNA'd when you take them to your AV for a wellness exam? They are going to have blood work done anyway so it's just a matter of an extra test...

Welcome to the forum, Victoria, and many congrats on your 2 BF. :)

As the previous poster already stated, if you want to know their sex, you have to get them tested by an avian vet.

If you find out you do have in fact a male and a female, I'd suggest you ask "henpecked" questions about how to best set them up for breeding.

Best of luck. :)

If i was going to spend the time/money,etc to breed them i would have Scott McDonald laproscopically examine them, . Goggle him and see how to find out when he'll be in your area. Assuming your in the US. Cost is cheap, my last amazons where about 25 $ per bird. YOUR PAIR ? At least one is NOT mature. i would never get both birds from the same person. Yeah i know he said they weren't related,,, But how many pairs does he have,, why is he selling these??? Too many possible issues for me. SIZE yes it matters ,, Is the hen too small to support the male on her back? Is the male too small to reach the hen?? All in All not the end of the world but i have seen size to be an issue in pairs and fertility. As far as breeding amazons??? They can be as particular or more so than most species to breed. Tons of old post on this subject , lots by me. Once again, I could write a book about breeding amazons but don't want to. I'd search some of the older threads and ask question if you have them. I'd also look for a "mentor" in your area. BTW where are you located? Here i S Fla you can find loads of amazon breeders. Breeding can be a controversial topic here on a companion parrot forum, yes there's several of us here, but don't expect all replies to be friendly. Your welcome to PM me if you need to but i'd rather keep it on the open forum if possible.
