- MjĆĀ¶lnir a.k.a Olly the adorable Major Mitchell
This morning I have been having a lovely time with my Olly. I started to post about it on Facebook, but the post turned into more of a ramble so I decided to post it here as well. Obviously, the information I included won't be new to anyone here but I'm just hoping to share a little of my joy <3
"I'm really feeling the love from my Major Mitchell cockatoo, Mjƶlnir (Olly for short). If you've ever kept cockatoos you'll know that they can be a big handful but also that they tend to choose their human, not the other way round. There is never any guarantee that you and your beloved feather-baby will have the relationship that you hope for.
I count myself very lucky that my handsome boy, despite suspected mistreatment at the hands of his previous owner, has chosen me. Although it may be a long time until Olly allows me to touch him (if ever), he will come to me happily. He will accept treats from most people quite well but he takes them from me almost affectionately. He will happily sleep right by me which is a massive sign - birds wonāt sleep where and when they feel insecure.
My smart boy has even picked up his first command, in such a short amount of time! He will now climb back into his cage when told to go 'inside'. Although he doesn't know any others right now, he also reacts to tone very well and I love to have conversations with him.
He will eat ANYTHING and likes to try and steal human food from me. It's a big no-no to leave food unattended around Olly and God forbid you crinkle a packet of potato chips within hearing distance. This morning he flew to my bed to investigate a picture of a block of cadbury chocolate that was in a magazine. Chocolate, of all things, which heās never had! Cocky be cray cray..
His morning dance is nothing short of majestic and when he shakes his not-so-little tail feather the world explodes in a cloud of adorable! A cocky's morning dance is a way of saying 'HELLO GOOD MORNING WORLD COME AT ME BRO' and little by little it is rubbing off on me.
A quick sideways glance tells me that Olly is currently getting sleepy on his favourite salmon-colored calcium perch. I love this creature so much, more than you can imagine. Having Olly around is like having a toddler with attitude and a can opener on his face running amok. He is my baby and at only around 4-5 years old, he really is still a baby..
On my other side, one of my feline fur-babies is sleeping, just close enough that she can reach out and touch me if she wants to. Should I call, I bet the other would come running. Iām feeling incredibly rich this morning and itās a fantastic feeling ^_^
PS: As if to illustrate and celebrate my point Olly has just come out of his cage to dance before flying a lap of my room and landing oh-so-gracefully <3"
Olly has gone back to his salmon perch now where he is clicking his beak and chirping happily.
I'm so elated that Olly will happily return to his cage when asked, and it really didn't take very long!!
How exciting now are the possibilities unlocked before us..
