Has anyone else had troubles getting their IRN back in it's cage even if he's stepping up?

I've got my IRN stepping up when food is on offer however whenever I go to place him in his cage he just jumps off my hand and flies away.

Any clue how to deal with this?

He was out for over 3 hours a couple of days ago because we just couldn't get him back in.

A wing clip would keep him from flying temporarily so you can regain some control and get him back into his cage safely.

Try backing him into his cage instead of letting him face the cage opening. I had a horse who suddenly refused to leave the corral. Beating him on the ass with a stick did nothing. Finally , I backed him out of the corral gate and rode away. Sometimes we have to out think out pets.

If Syd is obviously reluctant I show him a small pot of treats then hold them inside the cage in a position where he has to step up on a perch to reach in the pot! Works every time!

I have the same problem with Ducky. He hates going in his cage, and would stay out all day if he could. Try target training him or luring him into the cage with a treat.

With Tsali, my Congo African Grey, I have him step-up and then place my other hand gently on his back to keep him from escaping.

It took a while for him to learn that it is OK for my hand to be resting on his back, but with patience, clicker training (Click/Treat for accepting my hand touching his back) he is very at ease when I gently place my hand on his back. When I put him in his cage with I always give him a treat - so going back in means a yummy high value treat.
