What are their ages? Lovebirds should be at least 1 year old before you allow them to raise babies. If they are too young they may have more issues prior to having a sucessful clutch. If they are "of age" then the first thing to do before you put a nesting box on their cage is to make sure they are in breeding condition. ie healthy, good diet nails trimmed etc. A good diet would have pellets, seed, veggies and fruits, sprouts are jam-packed with nutrients (and birds LOVE them with a vengeance) They should have access to a cuttle bone as well (laying eggs requires extra calcium to prevent egg binding) If they are both healthy and on a good diet then the next step is the nesting box.

The nesting box needs to be large enough that both parents and however many babies they have, have enough room to move around in. They recommend 12x12x12 with a 3" entrance hole. My lovebirds prefer a smaller entrance hole than that though (about 2"). Pine shavings are a good choice of nesting material, mine like chewing up paper and tucking it under their wings to haul into their box and make their own nest.

Even if you intend to let the parents raise the babies it is best to know how to handfeed if you are serious about breeding birds, handfeeding isn't easy and it would be best if you could get an experienced breeder to show you how and let you do it under supervision before you attempt it on your own. There are numerous things that can go wrong if you are inexperienced and you would feel terrible if you lost the chicks. I found a couple of links that you may want to check out.

The best advice I can give you is to research, research, research! There are a lot of informative sites available (this one included) and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Please feel free to pm me if you have further questions!
