RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
I really want to get another Conure and I'm leaning really heavily on getting a green cheek. My only problem is the GCC would have to be in the same cage as Con. What should I expect if I try this arrangement? I'm kinda worried they'll bond together and have no need for me :( So any advice on having multiple bird would be very appreciated! Thanks!

Well, I'm no bird expert...but as you know we have a GCC. Love him to pieces!!!

He has his own cage, but has supervised turn out time with our tiels. I have a huge cage that now houses our pigeon...but it came with the two tiels I rescued and at one time, thought that all our birds could live happily together with all that room.

Not the case...Franklin, although good most of the time, is quite a bully bird and I wouldn't trust him with another unsupervised.

Granted, every bird is his/her own personality...but if you do decide on another...you just might want a back up plan just incase your Con or your new GCC decided they aren't each other's cup of tea.

Also, as you know...we have 4 cockatiels...Chicken Little formed an extremely strong bond with our Charlie, so much so, that Chicken who is normally a very very sweet boy, becomes a vicious monster toward me when he's with Charlie. None the less, at times, I let the two of them hang out together. Never had a problem.

Yesterday, I had all the birds out, Chicken and Charlie are of course inseparable. I had to go back to work, put everyone away and decided to leave Chicken Little with Charlie happily snuggled up to each other and came home to find a HUGE amount of feathers in the bottom of Charlies cage. Both birds appeared fine...but what the heck???

When I got Chicken Little out to spend time with him and put him back in his own cage...to my shock...I found his back was nearly bald! His wings were covering his back where all his feathers had been plucked out.

Obviously in the 2 hours I was gone, there was a problem between them. So now, I won't be letting them stay together, unsupervised.

Our hens are housed together, and they get along great, so far, not a problem. You just never know...so I kindly advise you to have a back up plan incase your plan is kaboshed by your birds plan :)

My Nanday was very jealous and hated my Blue Crown when I first got her. They eventually became friends, but I couldn't trust them together for awhile.

I'd also recommend having a second cage for the new bird. There are some that are vertically stacked so they take up the same amount as one, but taller.

They may love each other right away, after some time, or possibly never. You can't predict ahead of time what you will get.

I definitely will have a Plan B for if the birds don't like each other lol I'm still not too sure of how Con is with other birds. Tonight, I will be taking her to visit my store and planned on letting her meet with out Sun Conure and watch how they act. The Sun is the sweetest little thing who tries to play with EVERYTHING! Even giant dogs and kids. I figured it'd be a great way for me to socialize Con with others and give poor Sweet Pea (sun) some play time. He/she never gets any attention and I get yelled at for playing with her :(

Thanks for the advice so far!

You can not expect two birds getting along from the getgo. Con's cage have been his home by himself for awhile. Imagine you being stuck in a room with a total stranger and have no where to go. Plus you need to make sure the new baby is healthy first before placing them together. It takes time to form a bond. At anytime you want to add another bird you need to introduce slowly, not force introduction!

Also, as far as the bonding with each other and not you scenario...yes, I suppose this does happen to some, but with all our birds we have, this hasn't been a problem, EXCEPT with Chicken Little and ONLY when he's with Charlie.

When Chicken Little is out of Charlies sight...he's a pure joy to be with. So Chicken lives down stairs in the same room as our pigeon.

I had a whole, big nice response typed up and my oaf of a dog just jumped up on my mouse and somehow managed to close my browser  So without typing it all up again I just sum up what I was saying, I don't think it's wise to house birds together from the get go unless they were already bonded to each other from the beginning. It's kind of unreasonable to expect con to be okay with a newcomer invading his territory. It's not worth risking either of their lives or limbs. Is it a money issue or a space that makes you want to house them together? If it's a space issue, you could always get a cage that you can stack on top of the other one, although you really should quarantine the new bird first or at least get a vet check up to make sure he is healthy. If it's a money issue, check on craigslist, in my area there are always nice big cages online for $50-$100, and that's way less than you're going to spend on vet bills to recover from a bird fight.

Guess I wasn't thinking when I typed my first post. I will only put them into the same cage after the GC has been in quarantine and the two are getting along. There will be several days of supervised in-cage time to make sure things are going alright and all precautions will be taken to ensure the health of each bird. I DO NOT want to hurt any birds or do something stupid which could involve bloodshed. Sorry if it came off like that lol

The reason I want them in the same cage is because my best friend who will be my future roommate doesn't want me to have anymore birds because she doesn't want to live in a "zoo" as she calls it (I didn't think 3 cats and a bird qualified as a zoo...). It would be easier for me to have the two birds in one cage than two birds in separate cages.

Hope that cleared up some confusion and anger.

I hope my post didn't come off as angry, I'm angry that my dog doesn't look before he walks all over things but no at you ;) I thought you were just going to bring him home and put him in cons cage(I have actually heard of people that try to do that). If you put him in a cage next to cons and allow them to interact under supervision, chances are eventually they will start to like each other. Although my conure and alexandrine are within eyesight of each other all the time and she still goes all godzilla on our little conure. :52: If it is seriously an issue of "if they can't stay in the same cage after x amount of time then you can't keep him", I don't think I would do it. If it's more along the lines of, you're room mate won't be happy about it but will deal with it, then that's a little different lol. Just be prepared if they don't ever hit it off, hopefully they will love each others company though. :D

You didn't come off as angry IcyWolf, I just wanted to clarify so I didn't come off as sounding stupid. Con came first so anything that threatens her will go but in the case of another bird, it will be moved to a proper cage and my best friend will have to deal with it cause I'm probably going to be paying more rent than her.

Guess what I'm trying to say is the utmost care will be taken while undertaking this addition. Think of it as that crazy mom who won't let her kid go and play with another because the other kid sneezed except its that crazy mom who wont let her bird be with another bird without watching them like a human hawk and obsessing over every little squawk and nip.

Wanted to apologize, I was calling con a "he". Sorry con :D

I can speak to this a bit. My son got a gcc for christmas and the cages for Guido and Nunzio (*sigh* My son's choice of name ) are in the family room but not to close to each other. Nunzio is a fairly shy bird still. He was another case like Guido but not as extreme. When the two did interact though it was Nunzio that was the aggressor. They kind of ignored each other up until today. Nunzio flew up to Guido's playtop perch. While Guido was up there and miracle of miracles world war 3 didn't break out :D

I would not move Nunzio into Guido's cage right now though. They are at least tolerating each other though. I think that the 5/8" bar spacing is a bit to big for him as well. I was really surprised how small Nunzio was. Smaller than my daughters 'tiels.

I guess what Im saying in my own long winded way is that it really depends on the individual birds involved.

Just got back from my pet store run. The first I went to had two GCC and they were a very reasonable price for a pet store ($329). I didn't take Con with me so that I could hold the others. It was so hard not to bring one home :(

After that, I went home and grabbed Con then took her to my store to trade in some fish yada yada. We visit Sweet Pea who starts dancing and showing off (it was so cute!) and Con bobbed along and licked the plexiglass and contact called with her. We then wandered down the toy isle and were picking out new toys when one of my managers hurries over to me with a huge smile on his face. A customer had just walked in with a big bird and he wanted me to see it. Con and I then met Quincy the Harlequin Macaw.

While speaking to the the man, Con was begging and flapping her wings and trying to get on the cart with the macaw! She even took a flying leap but thankfully I caught her then stuffed her under my jacket. So based on what I've observed of Con today, she seems to want to be with other birds or wants to be with them so she can eat them? :) I might have to take her to see the GCCs tomorrow and maybe meet them. If all works out, I may end up with one in the near future.

Maybe instead of a GCC, I could go with a Hanh's Macaw. They're the same size as a Jenday when full grown and they're pretty good at talking though I could care less if they talk. Plus they only cost a bit more than GCC.

Sorry don't mind me. Just rambling while trying to make up my mind as to what my next bird will be lol

They may get along in a new territory but it doesn't mean they will once they get home! I've seen it happen!

Sounds like you had a fun trip, and I love hahns macaws, although I wouldn't say they are only slightly more expensive than gcc. Most hahns I've seen from breeders are between $700 and $900, green cheeks are usually $150-$300. $329 is pretty expensive for a normal green cheek, aren't there any breeders near you? It seems like everyone is breeding green cheeks around here lol, go figure.

I believe there is a breeder about 40 miles from me who also runs a bird adoption/sanctuary. I should probably call him and ask what he has for sale/adoption. I've seen a bunch of different priced Hanhs and the lowest was $600 but it's have to be shipped to me and I'd rather meet my bird first. I think there is also a breeder in my hometown who's info I've run across twice on the internet. I should find it again and call him. The nice thing about the GCC at the store is that they go on sale periodically for half price so I could get them for a breeders price if I'm lucky. Sorry I'm really rambling tonight.

I always feel like I'm rambling, I'm waiting to get suspended for posting too much lol. I'm not sure if she breeds conures but don't forget that shredded oaks is also in NE. :) There's also Love a lop farm and gems of the jungle aviary listed as breeding green cheeks.
