Jasper's Ring Trick!

I'm amazed what this little guy can learn. He's 7 months now but has had this trick down for a good month almost!

There is no limit to what you can teach a bird who is interested in that sort of stuff if you break it down into steps for them...

True. BB is doing better. He chewed up the perch he did not like and put most of the wood in his treat cup

LOL. After a couple of those, he's too excited about the rings to even need the treats. He REALLY wants to stack those rings! Jaspers going to be a smart boy!

Those are the kinds of tricks I think Kiwi would have been smart enough to do if we had got him as a baby instead of as a rescue. He's set in his smart but devious ways now though. He would just steal the ring and run off with it:54:

Maybe... at first. You'd certainly lose a couple no doubt.

But you have to teach them to play with it. Do it in front of him. In fact, even better if several people are having fun with it in front of him. Then hand him one, and show him where it goes. If he tries to chew on it, take it away from him and put it where it goes. Then give him another one, same deal. Macaws are very mechanical. They can and will do this one.

Oddly, my amazon does this one in reverse. Doesn't like putting the rings on, loves taking them off...

You stack them, I remove them for you.

My conures were my trick birds.

As always, Katie, I very much enjoy your videos! Jasper is quite the quick study, and I don't doubt that a good amount of the credit goes to his teacher. Are you going to attempt to teach him to stack according to color as well?

I should warn you, Sweepea does an attention thing with this one. Grabs a piece and runs off with it, then plays "can't catch me" on the big playstand.

Glad to hear it! Yes, eventually I'd like to teach him his colours but right now I'm just having fun with this

Right now I'm working on getting him to let me file his nails. I say "give me your toe" and he holds his foot up for me while I file it. He tolerates about 1-2 seconds then puts his foot down. Progress though!

It's funny, yesterday when I asked for his toe he held it up then made a fist and wouldn't release I guess we were finished at that point LOL

I figured colors would be next... No point rushing it anyway. I'm sure he will get it. He seems to have the temperment for this sort of thing.

I bet he'd love birdie bowling too!

And if he can already do the rings, then he already has the foundation for any "fetch" based trick. (i.e. basketball in the hoop. Baby in the crib. Coin in the fountain. Etc.)
He already knows all of those, by teaching him this one... just switch up the toys on him when he starts to get bored with the rings.

He will now probably pick up fetch tricks in ten minutes or less... because he's doing the same basic thing...

And you don't have to stuff him with treats, because he is playing with his toys... these are just toys to him. And trick training becomes interaction and attention/playtime, if you do it right. (And it certainly looks like you do.) That's the real value of trick training... It's fun!

When I had my conures, my living room coffee table was transformed into a birdie playground... Bowling alley. Soccer/hockey net. Basketball Court. Wishing well with a crank. Skateboards. Roller skates. Made some of it. Found some of it at the dollar stores. Converted a lot of kids toys to birdie use...

If a toddler likes it, chances are a bird will too!
