Mixed nuts in their shell are popular at our house. Today Jasper was throwing a walnut around his cage that he was having trouble opening. Then he bit a piece of the wood off a toy and whittled it into a pick. He then put it in a crack on the nut and tried to lever it open. I watched him go through four picks before he gave up. After watching him work for over a half hour I cracked it open for him. I’m always amazed by his intelligence and problem solving skills!

Lovely video, so cool to see how creative goffins can be.

Jasper has not gotten more social. He does beg for food when I eat by him, but that only means he sits closer to me and stares. He had a long molt this year and was very withdrawn during it. He now is back to playing with toys, destroying wood and using his play top, just no interest in us. I’ve often wondered if he needs a friend since we were told he had a mate for many years. He doesn’t really show interest in our other birds. I just don’t think my house could handle two Goffins!

Hmm, this may be a case where a second bird "for the bird" is reasonable. Since Jasper had a mate he may be more interested in birds than humans. Very similar to my Popcorn, patriarch of the goffins flock. He never warmed to me after separation from his mate Peanut (due to aggression) but can be hand fed and scratched. Popcorn is now with a female citron (no nest box!) and extremely happy. Alice is just big enough to not be bullied and has no desire to dominate him.

Jasper may do well with another goffins but yes, that would be an undertaking. And of course there are never guarantees any two birds will bond.

Well, now you know what Santa should bring him for Christmas. He needs a tool kit.
