- Shades: African Grey Congo Male, hatched June 20, 2016
Hi folks and fids,
I hope you all are doing well. It's been quite a while since I've checked in. I'd like to give an update on Shades. He turned a year last month, and he's doing very well. He only steps up to me now, but he seems to be warming up to my husband very, very, slowly. He seems to be very happy, except when he is left in the room alone, then he make his infamous flock call. He's giving me the impression he is trying to call one of my sons, but I am not sure which one just yet. I'm inclined to believe it my youngest son because he's the most vatic baby sitter when Shades needs to be quiet when I'm sleeping after my night shifts. His cage is open all day, unless we must leave the room and he has no supervision since we also have a cat.
He's still a picky eater, but he seems to prefer greens and beans, and green beans. I keep trying new things, with hopes he'll eventually give in and eat what I give him. He's rather neurotic, but he still gives into playing. He's such a silly boy, and I had no idea he'd be so much fun. He cracks us up on a daily basis. His clear vocabulary, so far, is "peek-a-boo, hello, and step up," and he began vocalizing in that order. He whistles what he is going to say first, then he sits in his cage and "practices." We don't swear in my home, nor do my husband and I watch television with profanity in it around him, or our children, so I think we are safe from him picking any cuss words up. We do, however, find it hilarious when we see videos of other birds exercising their vocabulary. I did teach him to "fart" the other night, and of course, he's mastered it already. I'm sure I will live to regret it, but I try not to have any regrets in life. He mimics the neighbors dogs, our cat, calls the cat, and beatboxes pretty much on demand. It such a sight to see him dance while he beatboxes. Again, I had no idea he'd be so entertaining.
